Mixed emotions abiut university grade Help!

I got a 68% on my dissertation, I’m dyslexic and didn’t have an extension and I couldn’t find anyone to proof read it for me either! I was determined to do it without an extension but I. The end I found myself rushing on no sleep to spell and grammar check it aswell as guvevit structure! All my content was a first but my presentation and spelling pulled down my grade. At first I was so happy with this mark but quite a few people on my course have firsts and now I feel slightly disappointed in myself for maybe not working hard enough or asking for more help!is this a bad mark I’ve always said I want to graduate with a 2:1 overall and I’d be happy but is it wrong not to strive for a first! I had a really hard time getting my grades up in first year.

You made a choice not to get extra time.
Do they know about your dyslexia?
Did you cnsider extenuatiung circs?
Are you in third year?

Why didnt you use soemthing like grammarly free for spell check or just get a friend or proofer to read as you were finishing?
Did they say spelling cost a grade?
Did you talk to tutor?
Imo it was a conscious choice not to get help. Seems to me like you had a choice and made a decision not to take it so you have to live with it.

I was advised not to take an extension as we have a lot of deadlines close together.
As I have dyslexia I take longer to write than the average person there for I ran out of time to find someone to read through
I have seen my feedback and spelling and sentence structure is what brought my grade down my content was a first.
I often can’t diferenate what the right spelling is out of a list that could possible be right there for spelling checks don’t pick it up
Your obviously just trying to make me feel bad on purpose I was looking for actually guidance not a response to make me feel ****.
Thanks.
You never know who your talking to over the internet and what there going through

I'm sorry you're disappointed with your mark. 68 is a fantastic mark, especially for a dissertation. You should be proud of that achievement.

Don't compare yourself to other people, you did your best and you've done really well. If you feel you could have performed better had you reached out for support regarding your dyslexia, you should definitely take this up with the exams office and see what they can do about it.

Ultimately, the dissertation is not the be all and end all. You're doing really well and if you keep it up you will be on track for a first. Good luck!
Some people may come across quite arrogant on a website as opposed to face to face but I don't think he meant in a malicious way at all.
I'd advise you to talk to your personal tutor and then maybe put in an extra consideration or appeal your mark but make sure to have reasons for what tiger state above as It wasn't very factual in what the uni may ask you.

68 is a good mark.

Tigger is not being rude, they are being straightforward. They are right insofar as you chose not to go for mitigation. If you thought you needed the time, then maybe you should have taken it.

With that said, 68 is a good mark and there is no point in you beating yourself up here. It is unusual to get a grade shifted unless you can prove an administrative error. It seems like your grade was affected by the dyslexia, but by how much is hard to gauge precisely. Given you were so close to a first, I don't think it impacted too much, but we'd need a breakdown of the rubric and your marks in relation to it to know for sure.

There isn't too much you can do. You could try the exam office or student support but it is unlikely anything will change.

Idk about that ibz mo on YouTube has his whole dissertation not count towards his final mark for a degree at Cambridge because of a RELATIONSHIP that broke his heart. That seems like a very poor reason considering his age but it shows unis may give lenisnce in appealing marks.

Where is the rude in that?
You posted a situation and I gave you a response based upon my honest assessment and what I would be pointing out to myself.
Feel free to identify where I have been anything but honest, accurate and correct about your situation?

Tigger wasn't rude.

You should've taken the extra time that you had been awarded and you didn't. This likely wouldn't be grounds for extenuating circumstances as you knew about your dyslexia before hand and didn't take what was already given to you to mitigate your issues. Going forward, focus on the assessments you have left and getting the best grades you can. Besides, 68 is still an amazing grade.

Try not to compare yourself to those around you as it will only serve to bring you down more. Be grateful for what you do have, whilst working on what you want to improve with the resources you have. If you are struggling with your mental health (because you've said a few things that make me think you might be) then speak to your GP if you haven't already. Therapy might help you out.

By the time I would be in third year I would know myself pretty well as a student and that includes my limits.
If I was offered extra time and I felt it had a chance of being useful I would take it even if I had no intention of using it because things change.
It seems to have happened just as much down to planning. Something like grammarly picks up on spelling and is a bit smarter than your average spellchecker. You could have looked into that months ago, if not right back in year 1 or whenever you knew about dyslexia. It also helps you with grammar or you could have arranged for a proof reader. If you had asked on here a few days before then I would have told you to put an extenuating circs claim in and then that would have given you time to engage a proofreader. It was avoidable and not just down to dyslexia, that is just organisation. You could even look into an ext circs claim now, but the deadline may have passed. This is why I asked if you had told your uni or your tutor so they knew.

This is good advice, so if you are ever in the situation again you plan for such eventualities, avoid making mistakes and maximise your chances of getting a better mark. Being well organised is important for efficiency. I thought you got extra assistance with dyslexia, extra money and access to specialist software? Have you looked into all that? Your uni should have been helping you from day one if you had told them. Your disabilities officer should have been helping you with reasonable adjustments to minimise any disadvantages, just like they would with other dyslexic students.

This is exactly the advice I would be giving myself or appreciate someone pointing out because it is forward thinking and aimed at avoiding a repeat of the situation.. If I was trying to make you feel bad (for what reason?) then it would have been much different. You just have to accept your decisions, learn from the mistakes and move on.

As I said feel free to point out anything I have said, which is incorrect, unfair or isnt aimed at guiding you towards not suffering the same experience again. 68 is a very good mark, once all the marks are blended its unlikely to make any difference. next time and for the rest of your modules take whats on offer. Not sure what sort of advice or solution you were expecting? Where I make mistakes I tend to take it on the chin and learn from them. I dont beat myself up. I accept all the decisions were my choices at the time.

I don't know about that (sounds dodgy to me) but I do teach in HE institutions and know that it is next to impossible to get a grade changed retrospectively.
i would certainly discuss with disability support and possible appeal. the equality act puts the duty on the university to implement appropriate support which in the case of dyslexia includes proof reading support.as well as organisational support if they have not offered this then you may have and case for reassessment but do not hold your breath as most universities while in theory support disability, in reality, do the minimum and less then the equality act expects .The office of students has evidence of the ineffectiveness of current disability support and are currently investigating why.

I should also say that being dyslexic does not usually mean that you don't get penalised at all for spelling/grammar, it means that you get penalised to a Iesser extent. This will be in the appendicies to the support literature, I imagine (it is where I work).

You can try all these things, but the odds of success are slim and it seems to me to be fighting battles that you don't need to given that 68 is a good mark in its own right.

People quote Ibz Mo too much and think what he says applies to everyone...it doesn't.

No one knows his exact circumstances apart from himself and his uni so his stories needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. An example of this is that some young people think they have a good chance of getting into Cambridge with below average grades because Ibz Mo did - but he was a mature student so that changes things. I have never heard of anyone's whole dissertation not counting towards their final mark but if it's true, who knows why it was allowed? There must have been truly exceptional circumstances.

His grades were good I think and I don't know about his exceptional circumstances but on his video he was talking about his relationship break up and that he asked for his dissertation mark to be taken away so his overall degree when from a 2:2 to a 2:1.
& he definitely did encourage a lot more people to apply for Cambridge

His GCSEs weren't good although he did show great improvement from GCSEs to A levels which is what impressed Cambridge as he was applying with those grades already achieved. The majority of students with average GCSEs will also have average A level predictions so it doesn't follow that Cambridge will make them offers because they made him an offer. In the same way, not everyone who goes through a bad breakup will be able to get their dissertation marks taken away. His circumstances were personal to him and it can't be assumed that other people will have the same experiences.

I know he encouraged a lot more people to apply for Cambridge and that is a good thing
