Does anyone know when we will find out if we are shortlisted?

Shortlisting is open from 28 Jan to 17 Feb so in between those dates

Hello everyone!
New year, new thread! Been thinking to apply for this for some time so I'm giving it ago in Jan.
I am currently working in a NHS lab as an immunoassay scientist, I have also completed an 8-week mini-project in a reproductive genetics lab funded by the genetics society. I graduated in Biology with a 1st from the University of Kent. I worked as a bank healthcare assistant in Jersey for around 3 years which I kinda miss now that I am in the lab all day! This involved working in various wards specialising in rehabilitation, mental health, critical care and palliative care.
This year I began volunteering at a deaf centre, undertook a BSL introduction course and I'm ALMOST finished an introduction to counselling course.
The real tricky part comes with writing the application though :s-smilie:
Best of luck with all your applications guys!

Hi there!

Have you finished your Counselling course yet? Your completion date will be after the application was submitted!!

Thank you!!!
Hey everyone, congrats if you were longlisted, personally it was the bit I dreaded most as it felt unfair if your application didn't even get read! The next stage is really quite a wait, from my experience last year we found out if we were shortlisted about a week after the date they had told us shortlisting ends. It might different this year as your interviews are alot sooner than ours (started in April) so try to just enjoy this time and relax😊

Hmm...it feels like everyone gets long listed? 😅 I am CERTAIN I got like one answer correct on that numerical test...
Anyway, phew! Good luck everyone. It's crazy how there are only 15 posts over the country but sooooo many people applying. Does anyone know the stats for this from previous years? Or do I not want to know 🙈

There's a document on the STP website that breaks it all down, but off the top of my head there were over 400 applicants last year for 15 places

Hi, I came to this thread to see what kind of experience other people had who are applying for the STP Genomic Counselling 2020 entry but it seems that there haven't been that many replies yet.
I'd like to share the experience I have since I'm applying this year.
I have just started my final year studying BSc Genetics at University of Leeds and I'm expecting to get a 2:1.

I have volunteered on the intermediate care ward of a hospital keeping patients company etc. once to twice a week for a few months whilst at college. Since being at university, the first couple of years, I have had small part time jobs working in a supermarket and on a bar and other temporary jobs here and there, including one as a paid actor at a halloween scare attraction.

This summer, I did a full time 8 week placement at Martin House Childrens Hospice where I was mainly a personal care assistant for children and young people living with life-limiting inherited conditions. I was also an all round helping hand, whether it be making drinks and having a chat with parents, playing with siblings or keeping the unwell young people company.
Since starting my 3rd year, I have enrolled on an introduction to counselling skills course and also applied to be a volunteer 'Nightline' phone operator (which is a service that my University offer for struggling students who need a chat).

I have read that they require a minimum of 6 months full-time work in a caring role (of which I have 2 months) and I have been told by my friend that very rarely do people who have just this minimum amount get in.

I will be applying this year just in case but I am not expecting to get in first time with the experience I have and if unsuccessful, I will spend the following year gathering as much relevant experience as possible.

So that's my position, I'd love to hear the experience that some of the other applicants have for the 2020 entry.

p.s. I am only 20 and I believe that the majority of applicants are nurses/care staff/trained counsellors with years and years of relevant experience. Therefore I am being realistic about my chances but keeping my options open.

Hi, I'm in a very similar situation to you! Currently in my third year at the University of Birmingham studying biomedical science, and on track for either a 2:1 or a 1st. I also have experience of working with NightLine and during the holidays I work with disabled children. I've also applied to the genomics programme too so I was trying to balance the two applications- this may hinder me though, who knows!

I also look an online FutureLearn course to find out more about genomic counselling as a career, and have organised my own tour around the genomics labs in Birmingham.

I've just been long-listed, so hopefully even if I don't make it to interview I will get some good feedback and look for more caring roles in the next few years!

Oh nice one! I only applied for genomic counselling because when I went to the open day, genomics wasn't what I thought. I'd much prefer to be with patients - but good luck! I was longlisted today too
I don't know if this is helpful for anyone, but my colleagues (who have just finished their STPs in genetics) have informed me that they only interview 3 times the number of positions there are in the country... so for 15 positions, they'll only interview 45 candidates. It's a serious culling stage! But, this does mean that if you get invited to interview, you do have a 1 in 3 chance of getting a position. Sidenote: I've been longlisted too and just hope I have a strong enough application to get through the shortlisting stage.

Anyone aware whether their referees have been contacted?

The website says they don't contact referees until after an offer has been made. It would be such a hassle to collect references from people they won't even interview!
So nervous waiting now! Knowing it’ll be either tomorrow or Monday we find out (according to the online dates given)!

I highly doubt that it will even be Monday - that's the deadline for shortlisters to finish scoring applications but we won't necessarily hear until March 2nd, which is when sub preferences open for those who get interviews. It will probably be sometime between 17th Feb and 2nd March I would've thought?

Sorry, I mean we might find out tomorrow if they released it early. I doubt they’d release anything over the weekend.

That’s true, although when I applied before we did find out the day shortlisting closed.

Oh really! I was under the impression that it takes longer but I guess it's possible, we'll have to wait and see

Has anyone applied for the Wales Trainee Genetic Counsellor post? If so, has anyone heard anything back?

I've applied but not heard anything back yet. Interviews are on the 10th March, so I imagine we'd hear in the next week or so.

I did too! Nothing yet... it's looking like it won't be this week now.
