It it ok to fit thick new brake pads onto old/brittle discs ?

I am going on holiday to the Isle Of Wight on Monday which is about a 6 hour drive there, 6 hour driver back and driving around during the holiday we will drive about 1,200 miles
the front brake pads were very thin and the discs have a lip on them, I really wanted to change the idscs and pads before the holiday but the caliper bolts are so tight and also rounded, I need a rounded off bolt tool but that won't come on time fro mwhere I'd purchase it from.

I ended up changing the brake pads and I will do the discs after I return from holiday as I will have mroe time then.

I have driven almost 60k miles and the front pads/discs had never been changed so have covered at least 60,000 miles, but the pads were changed today not the discs though.

is it ok to fit the new thick pads onto the old scored brake discs or will it weaken damamge the disc ? I will be changing the discs when I get home form holiday it is just emporarily as I don't have time to wait ordering the parts to remove the bolts e.t.c.

thank you

Well I would have advised to do both at the same time but you have already done the pads so... I don't think its very common for the disc to break just because it is scored so if it passed the last MOT then another 1200 miles should be ok

I do most small-medium jobs on my car myself but personally brakes are something that I leave to the professionals
Ideally measure the disc - they need to be a certain thickness. Fitting new pads to an old disc is fine, but you should always fit new pads to a new disc, so not sure where that leaves you after your holiday.

You're going to have to replace the pads again when you replace the discs.

shouldn 't need to if I only drive aorund 1200 miles until i change the discs
You should. New pads always on new discs.

On your own head be it.

Tom, must I remind you that "it has been well looked after". It's 100% fine despite what dangerous faults and poor maintenance he applies!

Updated, but still very much abbreviated!

Flabbergasted at all the money he’s been saving, eh?
Actually I’ve just realised that this means he didn’t manage to flog it 3 weeks ago on Shpock for £900. Colour me surprised.
Do you have a flank drive socket set and a breaker bar?

When you're ready to replace the disks, inspect the pads. If the surface of them is not flat and parallel, bin them and get new pads to go with the disks.

Depending on the car, you may be better off getting authentic disks and pads from the manufacturer of your car.
For example, in January I replaced the front disks and pads on my 2006 Volvo XC90 with parts from a South Wales Volvo dealer. Because there have been reports of some disks warping if not genuine Volvo ones and not used with genuine pads.
The old disks were certainly warped, making the car vibrate alarmingly under braking. But that may have been from driving it through lots of deep puddles during all the autumn rain that we had.

Understandable, given that he services his own brakes yet had to ask about fitting an exhaust clamp.

If I was being sarcastic, I would have indicated it with some kind of emoji.
