ICL A100 2020 Offer Holders

I’m a current first year. I just packed my room up in Woodward this week and was sad to be going. My floor had two flats, each with 8 people. Rooms all en-suite with 4’ (small double) beds and shared kitchen. My flat was 3 medics and five students from other courses. As expected, I got on with some better than others, the main gripes being a couple of people leaving the kitchen in a state and filling the kitchen with their friends at 3am and having no consideration - the same ppl lol. The staff at Woodward are friendly and it was no problem to have my boyf (at a different uni) staying. The travel wasn’t a huge problem and student travelcard ended up being just over £20/week. Walking through Hyde Park to classes was nice when it wasnt raining. There’s a big Asda about 10-15 mins walk away and Tesco express and costa over the road. The gym is £40/year. I liked that at uni events there was pretty much always someone coming back to Woodward to travel with. I’m moving into a shared house for year 2 near Charing Cross hospital with friends - not my current flatmates, some other soon-to-be second year medics and some other friends.

I would recommend Woodward. I had friends in costume store over the road which is also nice, and in southside, which I thought was ok but not worth the extra money.

Timetable this year, about 30 hours a week contact time which is more than any of my friends from school who are in different unis. We have one day per fortnight on gp placement which i felt a bit ‘meh’ about initially as I didnt have any interest in being a GP after I qualify but actually it’s been great. I was really fed up when we found out three weeks in that we wouldn’t be doing dissection but actually the anatomy teaching has been good but the pace is so fast. The key is to keep on top of the reading and getting your notes up to date as things move so fast it would be a nightmare to catch up if you get behind - I got straight A*s in my A levels and I’ve found the pace this year faster but I haven’t felt stressed if that makes sense because what you’re learning in anatomy is being consolidated in the other units.

Socially I’ve had time to go to sports night most weeks, do a bit of sport, go to the gym twice a week, spend most weekends with my boyf and spend time with my friends on some evenings either out or just chilling with a drink/snacks/film - so it’s not all work. Freshers was mad, so many events (and so much vodka) that it was actually a relief to slow down after. There are also lots of learning opportunities off timetable, speakers or conferences to see or study sessions.

Are you all planning to firm ICSM or do you prefer your other options? I originally wanted to go to kings or Nottingham - I only went to the imperial open day as I tagged along with my friend and just knew there and then that it felt right for me. I ended up withdrawing from kings before I got a decision from them as their standard offer was the same as imperial so I wouldn’t have even used it as insurance. I have no regrets.

Re accommodation - do many medics go to Wilson?

Woodward is amazing - all of my PBL group in first year were there and it was a great place to hangout/work on PBL projects. It's also not as bad to get to as people think.

I'm really liking Woodward, both the price and the environment. But my only concern is that is it worth the travel time?


Would you say that Woodward is worth the extra transportation? I'm loving the environment (and price), but the travel time is definitely a bit intimidating...

How many people share one kitchen? And how would you use the kitchen when many people are trying to cook different meals at the same time?

Eight. I had a lockable top cupboard (2 shelves), a drawer, half a bottom cupboard (1shelf), a fridge shelf and a freezer drawer.

Mostly there wasn’t more than a couple of people trying to cook at the same time as we were on different timetables and doing different things. We did have a couple of flat meals where we all cooked and ate together which was a laugh.

The main thing is to clean up after yourself - put rubbish/recycling in the bin and wash up and put away your stuff so others have the space to cook. Life would have been far nicer if a couple of people in my flat hadn’t seemed to think this didn’t apply to them. In the end I stacked one person’s dirty stuff on the floor outside their bedroom door because I was sick of their dirty stuff and rubbish being spread everywhere so others didn’t have space to make their food. It did get a bit better after that. You need to consider that people could have food allergies, or maybe a veggie/vegan might not want to clear up someone’s meat chilli from all over the counter.

haha I sound a bit mental! It wasn’t all that bad but just annoying when you get home tired and hungry. It was great to have my own bathroom. There are plenty of mirrors and good lighting for makeup in the en-suite so you don’t need to take them.

Are there students that do not live in the halls? Is it much harder to socialize if you’re not living there?

I’ve read that some rooms in Woodward overlook the cemetery. Any idea how many rooms this is and which type of room they are?

Just don’t really want to be stuck with that view for a year 😅. Ty
