Explain the burdens and standards of proof which arise in the following scenario: Gill has been charged with the murder of her husband, Clark. She claims that she acted in self-defence, or in the alternative, that she did not know what she was doing and suffered from diminished responsibility. Their lodger, Jaako, is jointly charged with murder but claims that he has been kept as a domestic slave by Gill since his arrival in the UK and, accordingly, has a defence under s.45 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
