is it worth doing a phd

Im considering doing a phd, and ive searched on google for where it can lead with differing opinions so i am wondering if i can a personal perspective from someone who has done or is doing a phd. So is it worth it, where does it lead to, did you enjoy it? Did u get funding?

It really depends on what you want to become in the future; if you want to become an academic you need to do a PhD but if you just want a job there is no point in doing a PhD unless you are rich. Also, doing tla PhD just so that you can be called Dr is the worst reason for doing a PhD.

I hold one. Was a nice few years work-wise, and it uncovered a few things about me that I am glad to know, eg. I like teaching and I am good at it

Academia is dead on its arse job-wise so prospects are not great, but it can still be worth it. Depends what you want out of it. I was funded by a research council

When you mean dead in its arse, do you mean the actual job of being an academic is boring?

Philosophy, with 2 languages

Barely. Fixed term, and contract ends this month. This is normal for ECRs. It is not an easy life

Getting into academia is very, very difficult and fewer than 10% of PhD holders manage a career

COVID has made the job market 100x worse

Was awarded April '19

I had something like 40 applications out, the vast majority of which have now been cancelled or suspended owing to the pandemic and funding issues stemming from it. Still have a few that could happen, and I'm on a shortlist for one if them so that is tentatively possible

Also applied for teacher training to fill a year, get a teaching qual (all universities want this now) and have a sensible, solid career to switch to. Depending what happens with offers depends which route I take

I am a current PhD student about 9 months in officially (but my masters thesis lined up directly, so about 12 months work so far).

Why did I want to do a PhD, honestly I fell in live with the field and the project and thought id never get the opportunity to work like this again if I went into industry right after my masters.

I spent a lot of time thinking the better decison (financially) was to just go into a grad job, I had some good opportunities and it was a head v heart choice
But the PhD did have some additional pulls:
1) Job prospects, I spent a year in industry (during undergrad) and everyone with a PhD seemed to find themselves in either a technical specialist or management position so I thought those with a PhD clearly demonstrate to employers some degree of confidence for higher grade positions.
2) I had also considered moving from a technical role into looking into IP/finance/consulting and thought a PhD might keep these doors open,
3) I had just moved city and was enjoying life outside of academia as well, I think if I wasn't happy where I was I would have jumped into a job somewhere else

I do have funding, I wouldn't do a PhD without funding.

Would I recommend it, if you really love the subject and think you'll still have good exit opportunities then yes. But I think your heart has to be in it, otherwise it could be a painful very underpaid job.

I depends on what you want to get out of it. If it will help you get on the career path you're aiming for, or if you want to make a new contribution to knowledge, then those are fine reasons.

No. Be patient and you will find a job. Take a lower paying job if you have to.

Running back to Academia because it's comfortable is not the answer.
