A great idea. Tsr must be one, if not the best sites around for aspiring medics. Articles are ideal reading for medical epqs.

If my son’s research gets published I will be uploading it onto tsr as well

read an interesting excerpt from the journal of the american heart association regarding statin and antihypertensive use and obesity. Based on their findings, patients initiating these meds are 82% likely to develop obesity, with an 8% likelihood of increased inactivity. Whilst I do get the increased inactivity, the obesity thing is perplexing, particularlly with statins as their whole game is to, y'know' reduce LDLc (maybe there is some unanticipated effect of theirs whereby they case increase fat in adipose tissues in addition to reducing LDL via their effect on HMG-COAr).

whilst there are some drawbacks with the study (it was conducted on a population of 42000 Caucasian Finnish patients, it doesnt specify the morbidites which are being treated and it excluded T2DM patients + patients who didnt continue taking their medication within a year - also doesnt specify the conditions), it does pose some interesting questions which imo should be followed up (what is the affect on larger populations, the effect on BAME communities, effect on patients with different comobidities, breaking down obesity incidence based on drugs / drug classes and different conditions).

reality is, we know these drugs are helpful and are prescribed for a reason but it does also pose the question of considering alternate medication and seeing what treatments are on the horizon.

also a bit of a question which I probably know the answer to, but is there a way to conduct clinical research without being employed by a university / journal / hospital?

excluding them (more interested in seeing how effective multiple Txs are vs developing new drugs...although that is interesting but requires forking out a lot of money to get a PHD and enduring 12 years of R&D). If I were to work for a pharma company, id rather do something like medical affairs, being a signatory or MSL work
