Who has the right to see a dermatologist?

If my spots are bothering me every day and i have been on multiple treatments before but even if my spots have calmed down a little but still haven't gone will i be able to request to see a dermatologist? i have heard stories of people being denied or allowed to go but then denied actual good treatments.

How do you ask your GP to see a dermatologist and what is the requirements? i used to have severe acne but now have a couple of pimples on my back and chest and a few on my face but they bother me massively and i don't want to have to keep putting a cream on at night before bed then a face wash in morning and stuff as i'm in my twenties.

It's honestly unlikely that you'll get referred if your condition is not severe now. You should have a consistent skin care routine anyway, that's a very effective way to keep acne at bay for most people, especially with actives like BHA and AHAs. My GP only refers me on to specialists when it is clinically necessary, and to get to dermatology (/allergy) I was having pretty severe issues (not related to acne though). The NHS simply cannot afford to send anyone who has acne to a dermatologist, it is what it is.

So they expect me to keep putting creams on my face and limiting what i do everyday to keep *****y spots under control? remind me why we pay taxes for NHS then? no wonder so many people are depressed and want to off themselves to be honest, ah well going to try tomorrow and we'll see.

Sorry we can't do ****, put up with spots everyday spending your own money on treatments like you've been doing for 5 years already or go and see a private specialist and spend £2,000 lul, useless *****, anyway thanks for the info just going to see what they say.

I'm sorry you're upset, but yes, you do need a good skin care routine if you're acne prone, if you see a dermatologist, they will expect this. That's just how it is. If your MH is being affected alongside the acne, then speak to them about that was well, they have a duty of care to help you with your mental health, especially if you're thinking of ending your life due to your acne. The NHS is really very strained though. What do you expect when they're effectively being strangled to death via lack of money from central government?

This was a bit passive aggressive, especially noting that Pathway is trying to help you
The NHS only has so much time, and they need to help people who need it most- ie life threatening problems and such. Your spots come second to them, and for a valid reason. Also, if you didnt realize, were in the mists of a pandemic. The NHS is working very hard, and they, once again, need to prioritize Covid over the majority of other things.
If you are getting this upset over the spots that you want to end it, I suggest you talk to someone about that. Specifically, your GP.

Your post sounds incredibly ungrateful and rude especially since Pathway actually gave good advice. It’s unlikely they will refer you to a dermatologist especially if the current treatment they’ve given you is working. They only do referrals if your acne is not responding to antibiotics or is getting progressively worse.

Anyways, once you decide to stop being so rude I can give you legit skincare advice that can actually help with acne.

If you want to slow down ageing, prevent sun exposure and acne then most people put creams and **** on their faces for their whole life  I started skincare when I was 16 and have been using stuff till now everyday and I’m 21

Ungrateful and hows that? because i'm pissed off i have had acne ruining my life for almost 6 years and spent over £500 on useless treatments now i'm being told i should just put creams on my face everyday for god knows how long 🤣 well excuse me i am so sorry, nothing i said was directed at the people replying and thanked them and you'd be surprised to know i wasn't happy when i read that i have to basically put up with it, if it seemed directed at people then i'm sorry but it wasn't and some people put creams on their face everyday but who wants to do that for spots? i get given 30mg tubes for my face, back, chest, arms and as you can probably guess i go through about 2-4 a month costing me £10 per tube so thats £20-£40 a month plus other expenses just to keep my acne on the same level with no improvements, i guess you could just say it keeps it the same and sometimes i'll just have a massive breakout and people keep going on about NHS not just giving away specialist visits but my friend with literally just a few spots on his face was given a visit and accutane and he's literally tried 2 creams from amazon. never been to a GP before his one visit to ask to see a derm and for some reason the GP just gave it him and to reiterate he literally has 10-15 spots on his face..all he did was say it effects him, me on the other hand i have been going to GPs and private GPs for the past 6 years almost, been on multiple antibiotics to the point of permanent side effects and have been on numerous creams, face masks and peels etc and still battle acne and scars and now i'm being told i'm on my own and to put up with it and keep spending my money on it, so sorry if i'm not outside clapping and putting <3 NHS all over my windows, probably was a bad idea to make a post in the first place to tbh as i kinda predicted the replies and i guess i'm being 'rude' so its all good, sorry people.

I mean, I get that. But skin care is just...part of daily hygiene, really? Like you buy soap for your body I assume, why's your face any different? And yes, medical conditions can be expensive, believe me I know. But you have to invest in yourself sometimes. Your friends situation sounds sketchy quite honestly. Roaccutane is a very heavy medication to be put on willy nilly, I'd steer very clear of that type of doctor if I were you. Speak to your doctor, yes, just knowing what I know about how referrals work currently in a variety of different specialties, including dermatology, you would be unlikely to be seen if your acne isn't severe.

Why are you so against maintaining yourself and having a skincare regimen? Honestly, buy some Alpha Hydroxyacid and Beta Hydroxyacid serums/peels, incorporate Salicyclic Acid in your routine, and use a good cleanser and moisturiser. In terms of cost, The Ordinary is a skincare brand which an entire line directed to acne and breakouts and it literally costs £5-10 a product. Not everything has to be expensive. And yeah, you're right it was a pretty bad idea to make a thread and then slander the NHS when you don't get what you want. Like, I'm not being funny but you won't be saying that when your older and have numerous health problems and need to rely on the NHS  so yeah, grow up and deal with it and we have all told you what your outcome could be if you ask for a dermatologist. And do you not think accutane has side effects? It can be dangerous if not used properly, and you need to be fully assessed before being prescribed that medication. So if your GP will not refer you to a dermatologist, it will be in your best interests. Honestly, you sound really immature right now. At least you're not in America where you have to literally pay thousands so you don't die.

Couldn't have said it better myself tbh.
Sorry to hear you're having a hard time with your skin. Severe acne is a nightmare.

The way most NHS services work is that you get treated at the simplest level that can deal with the problem. Specialists only have limited time, so if they were obliged to see everyone who asks, clinic sessions or inpatient beds that are needed by really sick people would get filled up by people who are actually not particularly unwell.

So GPs are given written protocols that they have to follow before referring people to specialists. If they refer people who do not meet the clinical criteria in these protocols, they will simply get a letter back saying, "Sorry, we can't see this person. They don't meet our criteria"

So when you want a specialist referral for any problem, it often helps if you get a clear idea of what the referral criteria are. The link provided by @Pathway describes some of the typical criteria used for acne. Then make notes on how you might meet the criteria - including a list of the treatments you've already tried - and go to the GP with that. That'll help them see the need for a referral if appropriate. Good luck anyway.

How do you know your mate didn't have horrific acne elsewhere on their body?

Instead of posting rude and aggressive entries on TSR, why don't you go back to your GP, explain your concerns and ask to be referred to dermatology?
(edited 3 years ago)
The guy is clearly annoyed like everyone else who has acne..he shouldn’t of worded stuff like that granted but everyone jumping on a defence wagon acting as if he just told you all directly to **** off is laughable 🤣 he just needs to explain to his GP how much it’s affecting him because it clearly is and they’ll refer him...its only when you go there just saying you want them gone is when they’ll keep giving you stuff and denying you and when acne is consistent and putting someone down they have no choice but to refer because they have a duty of care and sending someone home depressed and god knows what else isn’t something they can and will do and it’s very rare gp’s will ignore your mental health relating to acne. And I’m not sure what gp’s you’ll have been going to but no gp will simply tell you to keep putting creams on and giving up parts of your life to deal with spots...nobody is expected to put on creams everyday for idk the next 10 years if he’s had it 6 years...granted dermatologist are stretched but that’s no excuse to force people to shut up and put up with something affecting their lives and health and for him to even post on a forum he’s clearly desperate so just go back to your gp and mention how you’re feeling down and sick of your spots and they will refer you, if the gp doesn’t then see someone else even if it means going through a whole doctors onto another because there will always be ones who want you in and out and don’t care but there is ones who will understand your situation and refer you and if you’ve been on creams and antibiotics before and still have spots then that’s another reason they’ll refer you so I don’t understand why people are telling him they won’t, most of the cases where people are denied is because they’ve got a few spots and had them a month and tried not even one antibiotic or cream and run expecting dermatologist and are denied but in your case you have jumped through hoops of treatments and completed stuff they’ve asked and still have it so it’s very unlikely they will deny you but that’s just seeing a dermatologist, accutane is a whole different story 🤣good chance you’ll be allowed on that too going on your current list of completed treatments and your body acne but accutane is very powerful so they’re very strict on who gets it and who doesn’t but chin up mate and ring that Gp tomorrow first thing.
OP.. I totally get you. I had severe acne for years my GP kept putting me on the next antibiotic. I wasted hundreds on skincare and pumped my body with toxins and in the end was so fed up with the GP methodology that I went private.

First session, they analysed me and said obviously I need Roaccutane (a severe treatment but one my GP was very reluctant to give me) and it worked. Cost a load though, not everyone can go private. However my mental health was so bad at that point because of my face and body acne my parents were very supportive.

A GP can't prescribe Roaccutane. Also, you think it isn't a "toxin"? lol

Private dermatologist can prescribe accutane, friend went the other day and within 3 days he had accutane in his hands it was that easy..costing him around £1500 though and his spots are not even that bad.

No she was meant to pass me on to a dermatologist.

Of course it’s a toxin. I’d rather keep it limited to the minimum I need though rather than 3 and a half different courses some of which lasted a year.
