Iran blasts dummy US aircraft carrier with missiles

An interesting show of strength, although if they hope to kill an American carrier group aside from 'death by a thousand cuts' this doesnt seem to offer much of a reassurance of success. Not least given their attack botats (pleasure craft with missiles strapped to them) would be easy pickings for any number of defensive platforms employed by the USN.
With that being said, the eyebrow raising propaganda statement from Rebecca Rabarich are worth some attention, if for no other reason than their stupendous dishonesty/hypocrisy.

Iran has launched missiles at a mock-up of a US aircraft carrier in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The drill included fire so heavy that the US military temporarily put two regional bases on alert.
The US navy condemned the "irresponsible and reckless behaviour by Iran", labelling it an attempt "to intimidate and coerce".
The exercise comes at a time of increased tension between Tehran and Washington in the Gulf waters.

The drills - named Prophet Mohammed 14th - were broadcast on state television.
The mock-up - which resembles a carrier the US routinely sails into the Gulf - is shown with dummy fighter jets on either side of its landing strip. Missiles are then launched from a variety of angles, including some aimed at the carrier.
Another missile fired from a helicopter appears to hit the side of the fake warship.
"What was shown today in these exercises, at the level of aerospace and naval forces, was all offensive," Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander Major General Hossein Salami told state television.

Ballistic missile fire was detected and led to American troops being put on alert in the UAE and Qatar, the US military said.
"The US Navy conducts defensive exercises with our partners promoting maritime security in support of freedom of navigation; whereas, Iran conducts offensive exercises, attempting to intimidate and coerce," said Commander Rebecca Rebarich, spokeswoman for the US Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet.

Nope made me laugh at how dumb they are. Unless they have mastered invisible boats, then I believe the US would fire back and at much greater distances. Also presumes they have killed all the escorts.

You would think they were more concerned with CV19.

I will grant them, theyd likely do a fair bit of damage before having their forces wiped out. No one making the claim their weapons are lacking in quality or quantity.
Indeed, i'd be curious to know the *honest* figures for the death toll there. That being said, it certainly wasnt helped by Washington being, economically, at war with them.

Its a non issue because they wouldnt sail up the straits where they couldn't manoeuvre.
Who said their weapons are lacking in quality and quantity, they are of a certain type and effective in certain situations.
The US understands this and will not pit themselves in such situations.
Says a lot about the regime they think this has top priority for their people.

Really depends what they're aiming to do. Just because it is unlikely doesnt make it impossible after all.
A fair few users on here and plenty of ignorant news commentators. After all, we need only look at Hizbollah to see how effective just one can be.
Again, unlikely is not impossible. Who are we to question US strategic planners after all.
I mean yes and no. On the one hand from an outside perspective it seems dumb as **** to be wasting money on this. From their perspective though it makes perfect sense, they are at war with America and Washington is vowed to the destruction of the government there. Nevermind the historical precedent. The fact of the matter is though the US has voiced its support for "regime change" and supports terror groups in Iran, whether we like it or not the government there has every right to be fearful.

Yes ofc you will sail a multi billion $ carrier into the straits where you cant manoeuvre all alone and park it next to Iranian missile batteries. It could happen ofc it could..... seriously. Whatever makes them happy. Just plays into the orange ones hands.

Who said sail it alone? and how big do you think the turning circle of a carrier is?!
Indeed it does. Although it does serve to re-highlight a certain hypocrisy in Washington, as noted in the statements from the dear lady at forces command.
WTF is this? An HGV Katyusha?

PRSOM. The USN would absolutely not deploy a nuclear powered Carrier Battle Group into the SOH where Iran can deploy it's suicide boats and missiles against it. Occasionally nuclear powered super carriers will transit through there but only when there's no realistic chance attack. I doubt even the smaller helicopter /AV-8 / F-35B carriers would go through if the chance of attack was high (although these ships are still bigger than most of everyone else's).

Iran's biggest trump card regarding the SOH is to say that they've mined it. The price of oil would probably double overnight. It wouldn't even have to be a true statement as until the tanker companies can be sure there's no mines, no one is going to sail their super tanker through the SOH, at least not without a USN or RN escort. However, such an act by Iran would possibly leave their country open to massive US retaliation, including to cyber attacks that make Op Olympic Games look like a picnic.

That was just a tad embarrassing.

Apparently, the Iranians released a lot of these videos today. One has caught the interests of some people showing long range rockets boring out of the ground through sand lacking launch platforms...suggesting that they're hidden underground and so may be harder to detect and destroy.

Oh great, so Covid and now World War Three. Not quite what I had in mind when I said I hoped 2020 would be an exciting year.
There's a reason why Trump and Pompeo has been ratching up geopolitical tensions right now. It serves as a news cycle distraction, plays to their nationalistic base. If a conflict breaks out: bonus distraction.

got to love Tehrans police of 'making do'
Although its quite common to use such things now, Russia using cargo containers and such as well.

When one was making the point i was more talking about after enemy defences had been surprssed and if the US was keen on making deep strike missions into Iran (navy jets having *****y range).
At any rate, merely pointing out that assume nothing in a conflict.

To be frank i disagree with this. People will continue sailing their crude through it as they did last time when the area was mined and ships were targeted
On a broader point though, it would exactly be unreasonable for Iran to mine the area if they escalated their war with america to the kinetic dimension. After all, last time they were in conflict the Americans slaughtered Iranians left and right to support their chosen dictator.

Out of interest but where've you been lately? Havent seen you post in ages?

Fairly standard practice, all countries do it for such types of batteries - after all it would be very silly to leave tens of millions of dollars of expensive kit lying around to be droned

Indeed. Although, if not WWIII, they'd still make life in the Gulf ****ing miserable

Temporarily.

If the will was really there, it wouldn't take more than about 30 seconds to neuter them. For all the Western powers are crap at nation building and restoring democracy and all that crap, the actual use of power is lethally and brutally efficient.

Maybe, but thousands of missiles pulverizing the worlds oil infrastructure would be somewhat less than ideal globally.
After all, the one area they have the Yanks beaten hands down is quantity of missiles. Ones which, much to the shock of the Pentagon, are actually extremely accurate.

I do hope Trump and his acolytes are proud of themselves here though. It takes quite a level of dullwittedness to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (in a manner of speaking) as he and his chums in Riyadh and Tel Aviv seems to have set out to accomplish.

The video was weird in that the rockets appeared to bore their way out of the ground through sand, which according to the commenter is a first of its kind in the public domain. It was really weird, because there was no hole or anything...the rockets pushed their way out of what looked like solid ground and sand..
