what are some really long german words? i see that Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän is a german word for 'Danube steamship company captain' why is that so long?

Wow, what a word! I know another one: Arbeiterunfallversicherungsgesetz which is "worker accident insurance law" in English.
As long as they make sense you can make words as long as you want. When there is no official word for a specific thing that you want to talk about then Germans get creative and unite many words together to make it clear what you talk about. That's shorter and - believe it or not - more convenient for us to use than writing each word out (you need to pay less attention to grammar for example). I hope that makes sense

It's hard to choose one but I would say "komisch". It can mean something like "weird" or "funny", depending on the context. I use it really often as I find it to be a well-fitting word for many situations.

In history classes we get educated about our 20th century for multiple years. We learn pretty exactly what the reasons were for the rise of national socialism and how it was possible for them to gain political power. We also learn which crimes were done, how people were treated etc.
The stories and pictures we are shown strongly deter us from the social climate during these times. However, the created distance is only ideologically. This means that on one hand, we try to get rid of remaining national-socialistic ideas. On the other hand it's important to make the people aware of our crimes, to make us deal with our past. The more we deal with the 20th century, the more we are aware of the necessity to never give national-socialistic ideas a platform to prosper.
