Engineering with Foundation Year at Cardiff University

Hi,

I'm looking to pursue a Bachelor's in Engineering, but am not sure as to which discipline to choose. As such, I plan to apply to 'general Engineering' (UCAS code H100) courses only.

I've found the Engineering with Foundation Year programme (UCAS code H101) at Cardiff University. Does this course offer students to get a taste of each discipline within Engineering before making a choice in the second year? What is the difference between this course and H100?

Thanks so much.

I have merged your two threads and moved the new thread to the University of Cardiff forum and left links in the Applications & UCAS forum and Engineering Courses forum. Please don't crosspost the same thread in multiple forums in future

Whoops, completely my mistake. Sorry and thanks!

General Engineering would give you a taste in each engineering discipline in first/second year, before specialising in the third year - thats how it works in Sheffield anyway, I'd assume it would be similar at Cardiff.

H101 foundation year would be a four year degree (first year being the foundation year, before carrying on to a normal 3 year BEng) usually aimed at those who don't have the sufficient grades or subjects to start directly in year 1.

Thank you so much for your reply, thegalaxy. This clarifies things for me.

The Cardiff website says (for course H101):
"The course is designed to expose you to the broad spectrum of engineering disciplines through lectures, tutorials and case studies. These include aspects of mathematics, physics and information technology that are relevant to engineering. The practical nature of the course contrasts with the way such subjects may have been presented at school. Assessment is by project work, continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations."

Is this similar to what I should expect in the H100 course, or is the above description simply a means of attracting future students (and in reality different to the first year of H100)?

I've just had a look and Cardiff don't appear to offer a H100 course? It seems as though H101 (at Cardiff) is aimed at people without A-level maths to prepare them for a degree in civil/electrical/mechanical/whatever engineering. It's certainly not a general engineering course. If you want to study a variety of engineering disciplines over the course, then Cardiff isn't for you.

I see. That clarifies things for me -- thank you so much!
