help with maths question

Anya has 400m of fencing to create a paddock for some ponies. She wants the paddock to be twice as long as it is wide.

What will the area of the paddock be?

I know the answer is 8990m^2 but how do I get there?

Lets call the length of one side a & the other side 2a.

First make an expression for the perimeter of the paddock in terms of a.

oh is it 2a+ a + a + 2a = 6a
and then 6a= 400m ?

Correct.
Now once you’ve found ‘a’ it should be more obvious how to find the area.

omg wait

then a =66.7

and area is 2(66.7) x 66.7?

That's just the result of dividing 400 by 6
