Living in Liverpool: A Student's guide to Smithdown Road

Whether it's for a quick coffee, brunch with your mates or a quiet evening meal - Smithdown road is the go-to place for students. This lively hub for students escapes the fast paced life of the city centre whilst maintaining the warm atmosphere of Liverpool. We’ve put together this simple guide for some of the best places to go for food and drink on Smithdown Road.

The Tavern

Renowned for its epic breakfasts and queues packed with students ready to indulge every morning, ‘The Tavern’ is the place to go to start your day off right. This American diner inspired restaurant has both American and English breakfast options, so if you fancy a milkshake with your bacon sandwich, no one will stop you! Make sure to be prepared to wait though, the service is quick but the tables fill up fast!

The Brookhouse

The Brookhouse is probably the first pub most Liverpool students will mention when discussing Smithdown’s nightlife. Whether it’s as a meeting spot for sports teams, or playing pool with mates before a night in town, it’s part of the uni experience at some point for probably everyone who comes to study in the city

Little Furnace

This cosy restaurant offers some of the best pizzas in the city. With a minimalist menu of 15 different pizzas, Little Furnace keeps things simple whilst still managing to provide mouth watering dishes.Boasting its own beautifully tiled pizza oven - it doesn’t get much more authentic than this.

Tiger Rock

This Pan-Asian restaurant may not be the usual choice for students and is probably more of a ‘loan drop’ treat but nonetheless it is still worth mentioning. Great for dinner with a few friends, Tiger Rock’s small plates menu makes it easy to taste a variety of dishes all at once. Fear not - with over 50 dishes to try there will definitely be a reason to return.

NOMAD

Fancy your coffee with a hipster twist? Nomad is the place for you.
Low key, laid back and relaxed, this is the perfect place to catch up with friends and banter with the chatty welcoming staff. They also have a breakfast and lunch menu with vegan options if you fancy a bit more than just a drink!

LEAF

After the success of ‘Leaf on Bold Street’ in the city centre, the local chain decided to spread to Smithdown. As you probably guessed, LEAF specialises in all things tea - from chamomile to cardamom, you won't be short of choice. This spacious yet warm tea shop is perfect for those in need of a calm environment to power through some uni work.

MEATLESS

Fairly new to Liverpool’s eating scene is the vegan restaurant MEATLESS. This café offers a variety of vegan and vegetarian options with the choice to eat in or takeaway. Whether you’re starting the day with a vegan full English or enjoying an evening teriyaki tofu bowl, the welcoming staff and nutritious food make this an enjoyable experience.
