Sheff uni: should i pick mixed or same sex accommodation?

I was on an all girls floor at endcliffe and had the best time. The floor above and below were male and the top floor was a girls floor also so there was a mix, and we did socialise a lot as a building, but I really enjoyed being on an all girls floor as I felt more comfortable and we shared showers and bathrooms too

Does anyone have experience with either? What would be the pros and cons with just being with other girls, or with being with mixed.

I'm a current student at Sheffield and I've lived in Endcliffe in my first year in a mixed flat. In my experience, everyone was really friendly and respectful, and our groups were formed based on interest and personality rather than gender. It's true that sometimes it's easier to make friends with girls as a girl because it's more likely that you'll have common interests, but this varies from one person to the other and depends a lot on what sort of person you are. I personally never had any safety concerns with my flatmates and the guys in my flat never made me feel uncomfortable, and if that ever happens to you or anyone you know, the Residence Life mentors are really helpful and they can get this sort of situation sorted very quickly.

My suggestion would be to choose the option that makes you feel the most comfortable and that could give you the best experience. If you think you'll get on equally well with male flatmates, don't hesitate to give it a try! Before I chose my accommodation I thought about what I'd like my Uni experience to look like, and I definitely agree with what someone else said in a previous comment here, that friendships with guys and girls can be really different. I personally wanted to have fun and I've had both female and male friends for years whom I've got along with really well, so a mixed flat was the obvious choice for me. You know yourself better than anyone, so if you think you'd be more comfortable living in a girls-only flat or that it'd be easier for you to make friends this way, that's a perfectly good decision! One thing to keep in mind as well is that you'll have many other chances to make friends with people outside your flat, too! I hope this isn't too confusing haha. Although it depends on your experience, I went for an all girls flat in Allen Court in first year and am still best friends with the girls I lived with - we are even going to live together again for our 3rd year!! I don't think there's necessarily one set type of girls who go for all-girls, however in our case we weren't necessarily the kind to go out and drink every night of the week. That doesn't mean we never did however, and it doesn't stop you from socialising with all kinds of people. Some people claim it's usually international girls who pick this type but we only had one international girl and she's amazing. Another girl was 22 and engaged which I think might have been why she chose all-girls. The age range was 18-22 in our flat. But generally I think if it'll make you more comfortable then go for it! There's nothing wrong with mixed either, just depends on what you feel comfortable with.

Hi Both,

The majority of endcliffe accommodation has lifts in the blocks, definitely in the en-suite accommodation blocks. Some of the shared houses and shared bathroom accommodation may not have a lift.

I believe you can change your room preferences after the booking but you will have to forfit the accommodation you have already chosen in order to choose another, this was the case when I applied but it may have changed since then. You can always check this by contacting the accommodation team at : [email protected]

So I will need to pay for my accomdation all over again? I had mentioned to the accommodation Office that the room type, budget remain the same, just the preference be changed.
I logged in to my MUSE account and the prior booking I made isn't showing anymore. I'm worried!
