fitting in at nottingham trent

as much as i am excited to go to ntu, i’m as much as anxious that i won’t really fit in. i’m kinda alt and from what i’ve seen (in flat and course group chats) i don’t really think i share the same interests with a lot of the students there. i’m anxious that i’m gonna get judge looks and treated like a weirdo. did anyone else feel this type of way of am i just overthinking?
Use Uni connect on here! Also, try joining some society group chats as well, there may be some societies which share the same interests as you. Idk your background but if you are religious or BAME, you can even join societies with the same religious/ethnic background as you, if that makes you feel more comfortable. I am sure there are going to be many people who are anxious like you to

Hi there

I'm pleased to see that you're joining us in September and, more importantly, that you're excited!

The first thing to say is that, don't worry, you won't be the only person feeling anxious and concerned about fitting in remember, everyone is in the same boat!

There's something for everyone at NTU and we're proud of the community spirit on each of our campuses, and that sense of community is build on respect. Our Your NTU: Your Experience site will give you a sense of what it means to part of the NTU community.

We're adding events to our Welcome website at the moment and I'm sure that you'll find something that interests you and gives you an opportunity to meet like-minded people, so make sure you keep an eye on that page to see what's on offer.

You'll also get chance to meet your coursemates (virtually or in-person) in your first few weeks here, at least you know you have a mutual interest in your course as an icebreaker!

If you want to speak to current NTU students, you can use our online chat to do so hopefully you'll be able to find someone on your course.

And, of course, our Student Support Services team are here for you if you need them. You'll find more information on our "Preparing for student life" page. This page also includes our social media pages, another opportunity to connect with the NTU community.

Hopefully the above gives you some reassurances, but if you have any other questions just let me know feel free to drop us a DM if you prefer.

Thanks
Chris
I think it's natural to be nervous, I'll be starting a fashion based degree this year at the age of 39 and I'm slightly terrified. It will be OK though, you'll find your place I'm sure. Nottingham is a wonderfully diverse city and ntu have lots of interesting looking clubs to join.

I'm doing my PGCE. I'd like to meet people, but I'm worried about the whole COVID situation and thinking I'm going to not see anybody all year except the students.

I've been shielding since March, until last week if seen pretty much no one outside immediate family 😂 went camping last week which has made me feel like hibernating forever because of the lack of social distancing 🙊 god knows what I'm going yo be like when uni actually starts! I'm going on a bus tomorrow for the first time since 13th March. Think this whole year will feel pretty surreal tbh, already feels like 6 months of it have just disappeared. Pretty sure there will be loads of people who aren't as scared of life as me so sure you'll make friends.

Hey! I completely understand how you're feeling, I'm starting NTU in September, I'm pretty shy and reserved but I can definitely relate to being really anxious I won't fit in/ share the same interests with anyone etc.. But for interests, you don't always need mutual interests with other people, you can discuss general things briefly, and always smile and have small talk. I know it's not close friends, but it still helps to feel a bit grounded . It's hard always being self-conscious, but you don't know you will be judged until you are there yet. As long as you're happy with yourself, it shouldn't matter what others think. It is overthinking because it is overanalysing, but sometimes overthinking is good as it helps to plan. What course are you doing?

I feel you, I’m a really awkward person and I’m really shy and I’m quite. I feel like I will not fit or that I will not make friends and that I will be a loner. Also I have an accent (I was made fun of and bullied) and I became really insecure about the way I speak and I’m worried that people will not understand me or something like that.

I'm gonna be going to NTU this september as well and I'm going to be studying Biomedical science  I'm living at home as well so a bit nervous that I might not end up making really good friends. Honestly I wouldn't worry, everyone else will be in the same situation as you and especially at the start of the year people are really friendly and way more open to talking to people around them. Maybe try and join a few societies? It's better to join any group chats first I think since it sort of breaks the ice and allows you to introduce yourself without all the awkwardness.

Get therapy for your low self esteem and anxiety, literally no one will care and stop worrying about fitting in. You need to stop caring about what people think about you.

Good luck studying Biomed. Commuting from home won’t be an easy task but as long as you enjoy your time there and make plenty of meaningful friendships, you will be fine

Thank you! I actually live in nottingham and there’s a tram stop literally down the road from me so it’d take me about 15 minutes to get to the main campus so not too bad I guess. I’m planning on joining quite a few societies as well to make sure I actually do socialise and all that stuff, so hopefully I should be fine

You’re welcome. Seems pretty lucky to live 15 mins from the campus. Joining societies is also a great idea. It’s about putting yourself out there and hoping for the best  you do sound pretty friendly and up for it so i’m sure you’ll do your best and have a great time :hugs:

Hi there!

I cannot tell you how excited I am to see this message, I'm always dying to let students know that we have so many societies and that there's genuinely something for everyone.

I remember joining uni and thinking exactly the same as you and not really knowing where to go or who to talk to.

Specifically, I wanted to tell you about the Rock and Alternative Society because it really sounds like it would be for you! If you follow the link you'll see their social media pages where you can ask them more questions directly if you'd like - and honestly, they're all so lovely (if I do say so myself).

However, I really do recommend looking through all our societies to see if there's anything else you might be interested in! (Which is a general message to everyone, because I cannot recommend joining a society any more highly!!)

I really hope this helps, but do feel free to reach out with any more questions

Hope you have a wonderful day!
Liz
