Who's fault is it that Barcelona were thumped 8-2 and are in decline?

The media and pundits are pointing to the board, as they ultimately decide which players come and go. But let us not forget that the board actually invested more money on top new players over the last 5 years than at any time in their history. As for selling Neymar, that was not their fault, given that Neymar wanted to leave. Iniesta and Xavi, as well as Puyol and Villa, were way past their best and had to leave, and did leave. It is incredibly tough to replace those calibre of players at present, where there is clearly not that sort of talent available.
The 130 million spent on coutinho and 100 million spent on griezmann who have both flopped so far. Thats already 230 million spent

So you would not have signed them? They were World class players at the time of signing.

German efficiency vs siesta culture
Barcelona seeing the effects of being too short term focused and bad transfers/scouting.

They've spent a fortune on players without much of a coherent plan. A bit like the Galacticos model of old Real Madrid. Too many expensive players on huge wages and yet few have had a positive impact on the first XI. The core players are ageing and succession planning has been poor too.

The board has to be at fault since they have oversight / decide the managers / have been picking transfer targets. Barcelona need to rethink their board/management structure as a whole if they want to improve over the long term.

If the board blame the players, you'll see an exodus and then be in an even worse position next year.

I blame the players much more than the board. The players have let the team down badly, including the old and new players.

For all the money that Barca make, their squad should be better and more balanced. That is the fault of the board.

Barcelona bought the 4th, 5th and 6th most expensive players in the world - all for over 100mil each.

Demebele didn't play, Griezmann was just a sub (as the managers have just continued to stick with Suarez + Messi) and Coutinho scored two for Bayern..
Barcelona may be the worst run club in Europe. No balance, nonsensical and ill thought out transfer policies, an aging squad in very much fin de siecle and a lack of any coherent team spirit. Take your pick of any of these but it's all of them really.

Having said that, it wasnt as one sided as the score line suggests. At 1-1 Barca had a host of chances to go ahead and then it becomes a different game. Also a pity they came up against Bayern who are one of the most ruthless and efficient teams in Europe and have put many other top sides to the sword in no time at all.

But Barca need to start again and rebuild. Sell Busquets/Pique/Vidal/Suarez. Barca need to start again and build up some kind of ethos with key signings. Maybe even sell Messi, he's sort of become part of the problem and just feel as if him leaving would be "the end" of that era.
But Barcelona were one of the very best sides of all time, what we are seeing is historic and will be spoken about for decades in football circles. They wont find it easy to recover.

To start again, requires vision from the top. You look at when Pep started in 2008 and he was pretty ruthless in moving on Ronaldinho / Eto'o / Ibrahimovich (latter being his signing) to rebuild and they had their golden generation of youth players come through.

Now, Bartomeau is so desperate to remain as the president, he won't make any drastic changes. Can you imagine being the guy to ask Messi to move on? The whole city of Barcelona will go berserk. They scaled to the top of the footballing world using different methods but now the club as a whole seems desperate to cling onto something and keep taking very short term decisions with no plan.

Barcelona's rebuild will be tough as they need to overhaul their wage bill. They are reaching their limits financially - you look at the Arthur/Pjanjic swap (where Barca comes out worse) which was done to balance the books.

Since 2015, Barcelona have spent almost €1bn on 29 signings. Wages - Suárez at €15m (£13.6m) a year, Busquets (€9.36m), Alba (€5.2m), Vidal (€8.58m), Rakitic on (€7.8m), Dembélé on €9m.

Maybe it looks so much worse as Barcelona were so peak not that long ago.

remember Bayern's 2012 champions league final vs chelsea. Brutal way to lose!
Barcelona's squad need a make-over. Key players have passed their peak/prime.

I bet arsenal fans forgot what the champions league was
Apparently it is the fault of VAR. So says the man who should have been sent off against England in 1993 (see the documentary on Graham Taylor).
