If you have got your GCSE results and are thinking of applying to either uni, or are in year 12, this thread is for you!

My name is Oxford Mum (not really) and I am just a volunteer who likes to help people who are aiming for either uni.

The best place to start is the Oxford and Cambridge applicants threads

Oxford:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...3#post90575508

Cambridge:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...9#post90559506

There are even threads for the parents, if they want to meet likeminded adults:

Here's the Oxford Parents Association:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...3#post90562900

And the Cambridge Parents Association:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...4#post90575546

I am keen to help TSRians get into Oxford and Cambridge. I started off by writing a book with hints on getting into Oxford. I called it Oxford Demystified:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho....php?t=6100480

There are links to articles, videos and comments from the tutors themselves, outlining what they are looking for in a student (and even what they are not looking for!

Even better, there are chapters written by the students themselves (including my own children) about how they got in for their particular subject, resources used, how they aced the admissions tests, techniques for doing a great interview (but not interview questions). See if you can find a chapter on your subject! At the end, if you have a question you wish to ask the chapter writer, ask them a question and tag them in!

There are also sections about choosing a college (though you can make an open offer if you want to) with all the websites and video. Also there are links to state school schemes, if they will be running in years to come.

Over time, I realised that Cambridge applicants wanted the same thing, so I set up Cambridge Demystified:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho....php?t=6467286

Cue more fantastic chapters written by students/offer holders, which have been viewed thousands of times. There are also Cambridge specific chapters on colleges and Cambridge state school schemes.

Will be back this evening with more useful TSR links and Oxbridge info.

See you later!

Another great source of Oxbridge uni information is the blue university tab right at the top of your TSR page.

Click on this and you will see a section near the top called "uni guides". There is a drop down box called "find your uni".

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/con...590-university

Scroll down the list of unis until you come to "university of Oxford". Press enter. You will end up with this little treasure trove:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wik...sity_of_Oxford

Right at the top of the page, there are blue links to the application procedure and interviews.

Further down there is a dark blue section with the Oxford logo. All sorts of great links can be found here! You could look at:

How to choose a college
College pros and cons
A week in the life of an arts/science student
Academic facilities
Clubs and societies
Pubs, clubs and bars
Transport
Private accommodation
City Guide

There are also subject pages (but not for every single subject). Here's the Human Sciences on I clicked on, for example:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/uni...nces-at-oxford

It features:
which college offers your subject (important for Human Sciences, as not all colleges do)
Suggested background reading
Entry requirements (grades)
Admissions tests
FAQs and links to further information

Next up there are handy links to each college. Helpfully TSR points out which ones are graduate only.

This is what I found when I clicked on Exeter College

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/uni...college-oxford

Here you can find such essential info as

Location
Accommodation
How much drinks cost (not sure whether this is up to date or not)
Library
Food quality
and an interactive tour with photos.
Oh, and check out that chapel!

Right at the bottom of the dark blue section there is a link to personal statements used to apply to Oxford.

So on the rest of the page we have:

History of Oxford uni
How the university is organised
On the right of the page there is general contact info and stats
Admissions
Accommodation,
Libraries
Sports facilities
Healthcare
Shops
Banks
Eateries
Religious facilities
Social life
Famous Oxonians
Links to various institutions (such as Pitt Rivers museum)
And at the bottom, pros and cons of the university.

About halfway down the page there is a section called Oxford discussions, which show what we are talking about on TSR at the moment. At the bottom of the discussions section on the right, you can click on "go to university of Oxford forum" to get to even more threads!

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=14

You may find out that the question you have been dying to ask has actually already been answered a week ago! If so, click on that particular thread.

If not, on the bottom left hand side there is an orange "post new thread" button. Click on that and you can start your own thread and hopefully someone will answer your burning question.

It's a similar story on the Cambridge page:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wik...y_of_Cambridge

Here's a page on Cambridge slang (which I didn't know existed:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/uni...ambridge-slang

Law at Cambridge

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/uni...w-at-cambridge

Peterhouse College

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/uni...ouse-cambridge

Cambridge Union

https://cus.uk.to/

I could go on all day!

There is a question I get ask very often: what's the average number of A*/ 8/9s at GCSE do you need to get into Oxford for medicine?

Here's the link:

https://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/study/bm...ons-statistics

And here's the link to Cambridge medicine admissions statistics:

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/reque..._passthrough=1

TSR is great for medical information. There are actual doctors giving advice on the threads! Here is the "Am I good enough for Medicine Angst thread"

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...t#post90584948

The Which medical school should I apply to thread:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho...l#post90585252

For Law, the average Oxford applicant has 5.2 A*/8/9s. The average law offer holder has 8 or 9 x 8/9s

Grades 8 and 9 are seen as the same by Oxbridge.

Cambridge law statistics
