Applications for Frontline, Think Ahead, StepUp Summer 2021.

Naomi - Nobody actually knows whats on the application and I don't even think applicants are allowed to say whats on it but there's good tips and hints on the website

There was a bunch of people who got in the 2020 cohorts but was deferred for a year due to a lack of placement spaces in their area. So they get it guaranteed for the next year. So less spaces for us applying this year.

Even more important to get applications in early then.

I was looking into a Master's in social work too but I don't know how people can afford it. It's £9000 a year for fees, so £18,000. Plus you need living costs. So you're looking at £40,000 at least.

So Frontline is the only feasible option for most people. It doesn't look like the Step Up programme is going to run again. There's been no announcement from the government anyway.

Yeah its true, the Masters degree cost way too much. The fact that Frontline is fully funded and you get paid has played a large role in most people applying.
Social Work MAs are starting to diminish slowly now aswel because of the expenses.

I really don't know what I would do if I get rejected from Frontline, I really should make a Plan B 🤔

I am curious about the assessment centre this year, I heard that it is online but I'm not sure how that's going to work 🤷

Hi there, the MA in Social Work at Hull University is only £6000 a year. You are also able to apply for a Social Work Bursary, (parts of it are means tested) which I understand would cover just over £4000 of the tuition fees. I applied for Frontline last year. I had a first class degree in Education with Qualified Teacher Status, as well as lots of experience working with Social Services, I honestly think my age put them off being a very mature student!! They definitely focus on leadership qualities and skills above anything else, in my opinion.I want to specialise in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and I am currently enrolled to start an MSc on the same in September; I took out a Post Graduate Loan of £11.200, which covers virtually all my costs and only has to be paid back when you earn over £21,000 PA and even then its only 6% of earnings a month over £21,000. I will apply to 'Think Ahead' in the Autumn and I have also applied to Hull for their MA in Social Work, so fingers crossed!! Good luck to everyone wanting to follow this career path. Remember to look up the bursaries and the PG Loans from student England are also available - you can't get both together though!!l. Hope this helps!

Ma in social work is still impossible to do unless you have loads of savings or living with parents with the post grad loan of just over £11k is still not enough minus 6k fees so you willl have 5k lefts to last you 2yrs you can’t even get a part time job coz you do placement full time

I agree Anisa, it is near enough impossible without savings or living with parents. I will have a mortgage to start paying off in November so Frontline is the only feasible option. I've also looked at degree apprenticeships but you already need to be employed in a local authority in a social care role, which are quite rare. Also you're not guaranteed to get onto the apprenticeship.

I took out a postgraduate loan for my Masters in SEN, which paid for my tuition fees but I was still able to work full time as it was a part time distance learning course. I can't take out another loan now.
There should be more routes into social work that are financially viable, especially if you decide later on in life that social work is for you.

Yes your right. It’s seems if you have not done it as undergrad or in employment that will sponged your then the only way is through step up , frontline or think ahead.
I’m starting a ma in forensic psychology next month it’s full tome but distance learning so I will be working full time still and I have got the post grad loan

I got the link but in 2 minds to apply. When it asks where would you like to be considered for a role does not even have my region. It’s says yorkshire and Humber- North Yorkshire but I need West Yorkshire so does that mean there is no vacancies in my area

They haven't allocated any spaces yet so they all should be free i assume

I just completed and passed the online test! Just waiting for them to look at my application and decide if I can go forward to the video interview. Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long.

I'm about to start it soon, want to make sure the kids are fully in dream state before starting 😅

It was a bit tricky, my advice would be to trust your instincts when it comes to choosing what you would or wouldn’t do. I kept changing my mind which made it more stressful. Definitely wait until your little ones are asleep!
