Maintenance loan during Access to University course

Hello!

I’m 25 and have been in full time employment since finishing my A levels aged 19. I did not go to uni.

I have decided I want to go to uni and become and primary school teacher.

I did not do well in my A Levels. I obtained BDE. I don’t have the grades to go straight to uni. So I would need to do an Access to Uni course. I know I can apply for an advanced leaner loan to cover the cost of the course fee.

However, I want to know if I can get any maintenance loan (for general costs of living). I have a car on finance so need to pay that and also need money for food, socialising etc. I will be living with parents; but my parents will NOT support me financially. Their annual income is £36,000 so it’s not low enough to entitle me to any grant etc.

I’m really stuck what to do as soon can’t afford to do an Access Course for a year with no income. It’s annoying that just because I live at home it’s expected my parents should support me financially, but they won’t do this as they say I’m an adult.

My other option is to work along side the course, but the course says it is full time so not sure I would have any extra time? Also I’ll need my spare time to do my college work.

There’s no maintenance loans for access diplomas. You can ask your course provider if they have any bursary support available for students in your position.

Alternatively you might find that some universities would be willing to take you with your grades plus work experience or that you could get onto a course with a foundation year.

Thanks for your advice. I already have the grades to be able to enroll onto a foundation degree. But I cannot find any info on the top up after to gain QTS.

Also, work experience is difficult for me as I work full time already :frown:

I didn’t mean new work experience. I meant your current work history.

A foundation degree is a 2 year full time course equivalent to the first 2 years of a 3 year degree.

A degree with foundation year is generally 4 years long and has an extra year at the start (that’s fully funded by SFE) to help bring you up to the academic levels required for the degree.

It was the second of these I was suggesting not a foundation degree + top up.

If you’re interested in becoming a teacher then an alternative route is to get a BA/BEd in education studies and then get QTS from a PGCE after graduating.
