My hair is falling out

I’m 17 and I was given a prescription for low vitamin d and iron, I’ve been taking those for a while but my hair is still falling out. It’s so dry and I just feel so self conscious about it. My hair used to be so thick and silky and now it’s so thin 😭 I don’t want to waste the doctors time when they’re dealing with more serious things and most of the time, they try to limit the amount of people they see.

M or F?
If you're a guy it's normal for hairloss to occur, and you might want to look at Regain if you can afford it. It seems to be the only product somewhat good at maintaining hair. Unfortunately there are no regrowth medication out there yet, only those which slow down the balding process.

If OP is male I would advise hopping on Finasteride before trying regaine/minoxidil.

I've heard of possible ED problems with this, not sure of those claims though.

male or female at 17 it is not normal.

I suggest OP goes back to the doctor for more tests

male or female at 17 it is not normal.

I suggest OP goes back to the doctor for more tests

Hairloss at 17 isn't abnormal at all, it's not as common (>20%) but not necessarily another illness or something.

I'm 19, been on Finasteride since my 17th Birthday. Haven't experienced anything of the sort.

I remember reading studies years ago, a minority of men experience side effects, however in almost all cases they should subside after stopping the medication. Of course OP should talk to their GP before doing anything. (Although I must admit I didn't, personally).

I just did a google search, apparently it is slightly common.

I stand corrected.

In any case I would go to the doctor first before trying any medications.

My temples started receding at the age of 15. Massive loss of density from the age of 16. It's rare, but not unheard of.

Oh that's great, I think I must've stumbled across one of those 'circlejerk' threads because after 5 mins on there I was scared straight to use Fin  everyone was acting like it ruined their lives haha.

Yeah, you do see a lot of that on r/tressless.

I don't want to invalidate anyone else's experience, but I think if someone expects to get side effects they will definitely experience them psychologically. During my first week I attributed every negative feeling I had to Finasteride (headaches etc.) but these days I don't even think about it. Just pop a tablet and go about my day.

I'm actually considering upgrading to Dutasteride as my hair loss is very aggressive. Dutasteride is very strong though, so I'm cautious about taking that leap.

Best of luck to OP
I thought it could be due to being iron deficient and having low levels of vitamin d but I told the doctors about my hair and they gave me another blood test and they told me that my vitamin d and iron levels have improved and told me to continue with the tablets but they clearly haven’t helped if I’m still losing a lot of hair.
If you have low vitamin d, have u tried eating foods HIGH in vitamin D?

have pills as well don't get me wrong, but actively look for foods RICH in VITANMIN D. TRY IT .

if u smoke, stop smoking for 1 year, if you DRINK ALCOHOL STOP FOR 1 YEAR.

Do some exercise if you're overweight, if not try doing some 3 day a week jogging sessions.

IF YOU EAT A LOT OF JUNK FOOD, EAT HEALTHY FOR 1 YEAR AND TRY.

DO ALL THIS AND SEE

I had the same issue (also female and the issue started at the same age) and I think mine was caused by lack of vitamin D and I'd recently come off birth control as well. I'm now 19 and while my hair hasn't recovered, it also isn't falling out anymore (well not more than 30-40 strands a day which is VERY normal) and it seems to have become slightly thicker at the roots.
If you are concerned, please do go to the doctors, I understand that they are dealing with serious issues but that doesn't mean that you need to compromise your healthcare for it, infact, its probably better to do it now before it is too late.
I'd suggest staying away from stuff like castor oil and rice water and whatever stuff people put online because more often than not, it will just not work. If your hair grows back, it will do so on its own terms rather than because of oils etc. you could end up irritating your scalp even more and it could worsen the issue.
Do you have anything like PCOS? That could be an underlying reason

Well it really could be a vitamin thing, but if your hair is falling out after you finish the vitamins then you could have alopecia, which isn't the end of the world. I'd like to note that alopecia (androgenetic alopecia) is literally just the name for Female Pattern Baldness, the same thing men have - so don't worry about the name. I'd recommend you keep taking the vitamins, how long is it prescribed for? After it finishes and if nothing has changed then I'd ask for alternative treatment or perhaps see a specialist. Don't worry it could just be a deficiency

I don't think these things will make a big difference because there are plenty of people who drink/smoke/eat junk/don't work out who have full heads of hair. These things will affect the TEXTURE of hair (so whether it is soft, rough etc.) but are unlikely to affect the THICKNESS.
Hair doesn't grow back once you stop these things, sometimes, there is nothing that can be done
Although I will agree with the exercising and healthy eating, that could improve overall health and ultimately make your hair (and skin) healthier even if it doesn't necesarrily make it thicker, it will improve the hair texture
I’ve improved the way I eat and I’ve began exercising again but hopefully I keep up with it
I used rice water a long time ago as well as caster oil but they didn’t help whatsoever
I get heavy periods but I haven’t read enough on PCOS
I think I do need to go to the doctors because even my parents have noticed how thin my hair has become and my mums saying how I’ve lost my beauty because of my hair
So now I have yet another thing to add to the list of things I’m self conscious about
My hair used to be very thick but now it’s thin
I don’t think u have alopecia because I don’t have direct bald patches
The middle section of my hair has become really thin and my hairs really dry and unflattering
