Family of Breonna Taylor to be given $12 million settlement

Thoughts?: https://youtu.be/nYS0OqlA_HU
I mean her death was tragic but I think that $12 million could have been used to help so many struggling people in the USA. Also why haven't the officers been charged? I think that charging the officers instead and using that money to help the homeless in the USA would have been better?
Seems reasonable to me, they killed an innocent woman because the police didn't think they should have to identify themselves in a country known for widespread gun ownership and the right to protect your home from intruders.

The reason the police have been protected is complicated because of the ridiculous levels of protection offered to police in many of states of the US.

I wish that the police officers were changed... Yeah the police are overpowered in the USA.

Deserved more. That amount is only 6% of the Louisiana Police Dept anyway so i see this as ‘defunding the police’. That amount won’t bring her back anyway so it’s a small price considering the officers havent been charged

Why did they deserve more? Thata mount is already exponentially more than similar blood money.

Technically its none of the funding as itll come from insurers most likely.

Quite a bit of money, more than any individual really needs.
Hopefully her family does some good with it.

Indeed it wont and heads should roll for that most disgraceful episode but, and there is a but here, cases like this do run into the issue that the more you punish the police the more you punish rate payers - as even if the case is settled by insurers the civillians will still bear the cost in a roundabout way. I'm not saying the $12m is undeserved but im reticent about blank cheque writing in such cases.

I do agree with the issue on the cops though. This is not a debatable topic like some of these cases e.g. the spithood fellow, this is clearly a crime committed by trigger happy ploddies.

More? Hell no. What I am trying to say is that INSTEAD of giving money to them the officers should have been charged and the $12 million could have been used to help the homeless in the USA. I am not saying that they don't deserve the money I say that letting the police officers rot in jail for the rest of their lives would have been better than giving them $12 million and not charging the officers imo.

Nope, deserved more. That amount is only 6% of the Louisiana Police Department annual budget. If they simply defunded the police then the money would go to the causes you are advocating for. They can’t get the police arrested, we’ve been trying for 6 months which is why they got a civil suit so don’t make it seem like they chose one over the other. The officer’s case is finally being brought to a grand jury and i think I’d leave it to the family to decide what they think is better??? No amount of money will bring her back to life so as previously said, they’ll always deserve more. Also what does helping the homeless have to do with Breonna lol, her death isn’t some charity or did i miss something? Why should they use their settlement money to handle the job of the government when the government has the funding???? No.

I’m happy you agree, i get what u mean about the cheque. I read an article about how (as u said) the money would come from insurers and taxpayers which is annoying with all these big police budgets walking around but oh well, what can we do 🤷🏽*♂️

There's still scope for that; there's a grand jury investigation ongoing to determine whether they should be charged.
Far too slowly, mind, but something nonetheless.

I said that the officers should have been charged INSTEAD of the $12 million dollars. That's not me saying that they don't deserve the money. The family are still fighting for justice so I think that arresting the officers is better than handing them more money and firing the officers (the officers can get a job in another area). Have you seen the poverty in the USA? Sad that the USA (and some other countries) aren't willing to spend a few million to help the poor. Still don't know why the officers can't be charged though.

$12 million is A LOT of money. I have no idea what her family will do with it. Probably squander it as most people would do.

Yep too bad they are taking so long to charge the officers. If they were quicker we wouldn't had to have done both.
The police obviously have a need of better training for what is undoubtedly a difficult job, wether l approaching a car door or a front door knowing there is a very good chance the person the other side could have a gun.

Perhaps if the $12m was to come out of the 401s of the top people in charge of the police it would make them get their fingers out and improve the training.

I recall the guy killed in Swatting , told get on the floor, then to get up. There were half a dozen AR15s trained on him.

He was a fat guy in loose sweat pants and as he got up they started to come down. He instinctively went to pull them up by his hips and subsequently died from s haul of bullets.

That it was beyond the imagination of these professionals that this might happen and to warn him to not put his hands anywhere near his body is unbelievable.

White guy btw.

And these were the specialist officers not just street cops.😕
