The Student Room Group

Was living in halls a bad choice this year....

Im starting to get quite annoyed with myself.
I chose to live in halls for my first year in order to gain the experience of living away from home and hopefully make new friends.

This is my second day here and I'm already having doubts. On the first day I got here, I unpacked, met the only other person here so far (who isn't here most the time) and had a small chat, got in some group chats, went to the shop so as to walk round campus and get an idea of what's what and came home. Not overly productive but not bad.

Today:
I'm basically the only one moved into my halls, so I have no-one to socialise with really. Most welcome week events start next week and even they are online, I have emailed some societies but they seem to not be running due to covid so that's another social aspect out the window. I have applied for some jobs so I can at least get out my house but they aren't guaranteed.

I have mates coming down everyday this week starting tomorrow so I should be busy then but in the mean time I have spent every second of today in my room, trying to find something to do.

The independence of living away seems to be the only thing so far that I have benefitted from moving here. Im hoping when the other housemates move in it should be a little more social but right now I feel so anti social and bored, and I am having huge doubts about if it was worth the money to move here when I could be doing this at home where all my friends and family are for free

Sorry about the rant.
Is anyone else in a similar position or has any advice? I don't want to move back home, I do want to stick it out and hope the social aspect gets better but I think covid has ruined it a little.
Congrats on starting uni!

Firstly, I think you need to give it time. The rest of your flat mates haven’t moved in yet, so of course it’s going to feel like there’s nobody to socialise with.

I do think it’s worth moving into halls. You won’t get the independence you do in halls if you stayed at home.

As for being bored, why don’t you go out and explore the area? I’m sure you could find lots out about where you are.

Just give it some time, it’s been 2 days and not everyone has moved in. It’s way too quick to make a judgement!

Good luck
I don't think you can make a judgement until the rest of your flatmates have moved in!

I was thinking that. I really hope you're right. My social life was pretty good at home and so I feel like I've moved backwards slightly

I think your probably right it just seems weird. I was expecting something a lot different. But I think your probably right it is a bit quick to judge:smile: thank you

Yeah, I understand! Everyone goes in with high expectations so it’s hard when it doesn’t quite match! I think give it time and meet all your flat mates when they move in, most people will be feeling the same way as you so I’m sure you’ll find your feet and some friends quickly

Hey Anonymous,

It's totally a normal worry and I'm sure everyone has thought about this! With the entry to halls now being staggered due to COVID, it's not as big as a day when everyone suddenly meets. Without meeting your flatmates it's impossible to know what they will be like. But, you can try seeing if your uni has an official Facebook page run where you can talk to your flatmates? I do know when I am at home alone with nothing to do the time does almost seem to stand still. As easy as this is to say, try not to worry too much, for now, you can only decide when you meet them. I would say whilst they're not here try and go outside for walks etc and maybe explore your campus, especially as the weather has been so nice. Very soon, I'm sure they will be moving in!

All that aside, I find it really helpful to move in personally. I tend to work best in the library and living at uni allows me to make use of that.

Hope this helps and let us know if you have any questions!😊

Thanks for the reply:smile: and yeah when I occasionally see the other guy in the kitchen and other common areas I do talk to him and so I managed to get the group chat with everyone who should be moving in so I have a rough idea of who to expect. I’m hoping once everyone’s in the house and societies and activities start it might change. As I said I’m meeting some mates tomorrow Friday and Saturday but as much as I love my mates, I am hoping to get some new relationships going as well as maintaining ones from back home.
Just gotta wait and see I guess.
Thanks again
