Feeling lonely at uni

I started uni last week and I'm feeling super lonely as shown by the title. I'm in uni halls rn, but because of social distancing and my own shyness it's been really difficult to make friends and take part in social activities. Everyone around me seems to have already coalesced into their own social bubbles really quickly.

I'm not sure what to do, even during the pandemic I want to make the most of my time at uni, and I don't want the whole year to go by without making any friends :/ Any suggestions??

Join as many societies as possible, all the friends I made in first year were mostly through societies. With covid it won’t be easy since you can’t meet in person yet but joining as many virtual events as you can will help you feel better and allow you to learn some new faces for when societies can meet up safely again!

The friends people make in the first week rarely last as they are born out of need not like.Just be friendly to your flatmates and people you like the look of.It is still really early days and there are many many people you are yet to meet.
Same situation. Been here 2 weeks already and made 0 friends :|

If I am being honest I think students have been tricked.The unis and government knew the Covid situation was going to result in little face to face teaching and socialising would be limited,plus Covid outbreaks would be inevitable.The only reason this term was not held online from home was that the unis needed the money from tuition fees and accommodation contracts to avoid going bankrupt.Disgraceful in my opinion and no thought given to the health mental or physical of students.
Pick up some hobbies T_T

Life isn't all about being surrounded by great people or making loads of friends, bettering yourself without that is also a viable pursuit :tongue:

Yeah I’m stuck trying to get out of my accommodation contract. There’s a clause stating I will need to find a replacement or be held liable for the full contract. I was stupid to sign it but I can’t find anyone even after offering a large cash bonus and this is in London lol

Have you talked to uni accommodation about this?Would you want to actually drop out of course completely if you could or is it just the campus situation?

Hi, I’ve spoken to them and said I need to look after a family member (my dad is now afraid to go out as he’s got a very weak immune system) but they said the contract is legally binding. I’m second year so I wouldn’t want to drop out. I don’t think I have any more options unfortunately
I did not realise it was second year. I guess you will have to keep trying to get a new tenant. Have they offered to help you advertise? Second years are in terrible position my daughter also had already signed contract months ago and you are already committed to course. Are you allowed to work from home. :console:

Luckily the residential manager got back to me and agreed to terminate my contract in the end which is very fortunate! It did take the best part of a week to resolve but it was worth it. Good luck to your daughter, is she also trying to terminate her contract?

No I think she has decided to stay put but she is very anxious having had the virus already at uni in March. Delighted for you and glad manager saw what the right thing to do was. Hope things all work out and you and dad stay safe. :flower2:
