Hi everyone! Random question but is anyone potentially considering putting Trinity down as their top choice? They offer masters studentships which is pretty unique, but I also don't know if I am just wasting first choice on them.... Any thoughts?

Putting Trinity first is OK if you are happy ending up anywhere, but if you want maximise your control over which College you are at, it's not the best strategy. Something like 80% of all overseas applications (which are the majority of applications at PG level) put Trinity, St Johns or Kings down in their choices. Plus most of their continuing students choose to stay, so unless your application is outstanding and so you get an offer very early in the process, the chances are the College will be full by the time your file arrives. If your second choice is a popular College, then that might also be full once your file has wasted some time at Trinity, so chances are you will end up at a mature College (or women's if applicable). Nothing wrong with that, they are great Colleges, but if you want a different second choice, you might not want to risk the time that can be wasted on making an application to one of the 'big three'.

In addition to what others have said, Trinity's pastoral care for their students is not very good.

They will definitely put your undergraduate performance into consideration. But your other experience will also be considered. I don't think it is meaningful to concentrate too much on your past experience. Just apply and you will get a chance.
Hi all,

Is anyone applying for PhD in Architecture? Any ideas about how detailed the research proposal needs to be?
I haven't started it yet, I am still reading here and there. Getting into the "freaking out phase" now! :s-smilie:

Hi! I applied to mphil heritage studies, so different, but same department at least

Hey thanks for replying, and assuring that I'm not the only one here. And all the best for your mphil application. What do they expect for an MPhil in our field at Oxbridge? I have a first class bachelor's and a 2:1 in my master's, and I'm contemplating whether to even apply at Oxbridge(I'm also applying for an MSc Paleoanthro and Palaeolithic Arch at UCL, I plan to specialise in quaternary prehistory). Do you have an idea how these departments compare? I'm quite sure about UCL, but my doubts regarding Oxford arise because of the fact that their MSc Arch took their first batch as recently as just the last year, which only makes me consider how well that'd prepare me for a future PhD. And I don't know much about Cambridge. Any insights?
Thanks!!

I'm doing my Msc in Finance at Imperial College currently, and didn't put a college preference down.

I think your grade meets the requirement for our department right? I would definitely say go for it bc you know your niche and what you want to do with the degree and I think they'll really appreciate that. My program is also only two years old, but I've heard some good things about it online. I honestly don't really know how UCL and Cambridge's programs compare bc I'm actually leaning more towards museum anthro stuff but I'm applying for Heritage Studies bc there's a big overlap. So unfortunately I'm a little new to the archaeology field. One of my professors at my uni did his archaeology PhD at Cambridge though and he's always extremely complimentary of the program. I think its small size (close rship to staff) and access to resources makes it worth it! All the best luck to you!! Keep us posted

If your interest is in museums, then I wouldn't advise bothering with a Cam application - they aren't currently able to support Museum ambitions. indeed of your application is strongly museum focussed, chances are you will be rejected. Despite the number of museums in Cam, the Heritage MPhil is embedded within archaeology and hasn't yet managed to create links with museums in any meaningful way. Happy to take it to pm for more discussion.

Would love to join as well! Will be applying for Dev Studies
Submitted my application today! My reference writers haven't submitted their references yet but hopefully they'll do that within the next couple of weeks! Now the waiting begins which I think is the worst part haha, hopefully will hear back soon though!
Hi friends! I'm a Dev Studies applicant too. I was accepted for 2020 however was unsuccessful for funding so am going to try again this year.

If anyone has tips on what college has good funding opps for overseas Mphil students I would love to hear them. I was accepted to a popular college last year, but it looked like all of the masters studentships went to home students, even though they were advertised as being for both.

Congrats! I'm in the first round, application complete and moved to departmental review yesterday. Time for the anxious waiting game.
