Are these unis good choices?

So I want to take a course that isn’t offered in a lot of places (I’m not going to say what it is because people always attack me saying it’s pointless haha)

Basically the unis I’m looking at are -

-Aberystwyth
-Cardiff Met
-York St John
-Gloucestershire
-Bournemouth

I know it’s hard to say how they are without knowing my course, but on a basis of hearing student opinions - has anyone been to any of these and can comment about their experience?

Set up some criteria about what is important to you.
Do research and go to open days plus ask students who do that course or speak to stude reps.
You can also have a look on studentcrowd to see if the same things crop up.


Given the choice I dont think I would choose any of them and would seek to get better levels 3 quals.

Without knowing the course, it's hard to give the best advice, but here goes anyway.

Your ability seems to be somewhat beyond the level of those universities. Have you considered completing your level 3 studies and doing a less specialised course at a "better" university?

How did they cut you down to 112? They have given you a diploma rather than an extended?
All sounds unusual and I would be looking to get the full extended and appealing about it.
If you are bothered about career prospects, then a degree from a better uni will stand you in better stead and would be a shame to waste, but your life!

It depends on your personal circumstances.
Ambitions, undergrad course, career plans, finances, standard of living and student lifestyle preferences.

I have some friends who went to Aberystwyth or Bournemouth for undergrad.
All say that they have no regrets about their choice; were very happy with their undergrad experience, highly recommend their uni/campus/personal tutor and most returned after graduation for at least another year of study.

The unis I have chosen specialise in my course and are worldwide known for my subject. I’ve 100% looked into this into depth.

Without knowing your course it is really difficult to advise you. Having a diploma is the equivalent of 2 A levels and most normally want 3. Can you take an A level or subsidiary diploma or go to on to an extended diploma this year to widen tour option. Of the 5 choices I suspect Aberystwyth will be the best. However what you do need to consider is that it is quite remote from nearly everywhere and you need to factor that in. Nearly everywhere is at least 3 hours from Aber.

It is a really nice place and has very high student satisfaction rates. It is a small seaside town full of many pubs. Reputedly it has more pubs per population than anywhere. As I say its big drawback is that it is far away from most places. I have known loads of people who went to Aber and give it rave reviews.

I'm not sure that anyone else is going to know better then, especially as we don't even know the course.

Yeah when I was looking at it I saw how remote it was, but it really isn’t that big of a deal to me!

As I’ve stated in my replies, all universities that offer my course ask for a maximum of 112 UCAS points which is what I would obtain, so I don’t see the point in staying at college to get another qualification when I already achieve the entry requirements

I would certainly look further into whether they will accept you with just a diploma. Ucas points can only be part of the story. They usually require the points in the equivalent of 3 A level subjects which you currently dont have.

They do, I’ve checked. All universities that I’m looking at accept on the grounds of UCAS points - they don’t specify which diploma. All they say is these points must be achieved through a levels or a BTEC related to the course. At open days, I have asked this question and all unis say they would accept.

Also the points I achieve would be equivalent to a PPP in an Extended Diploma so would qualify as the correct amount wanted for that anyway.

Even though the points may be equal universities usually insist on the equivalent of 3 A levels which you dont have. If they have told you it is ok then that is fine but that would be very unusual. If I was in your position I would be double checking if a diploma on its own is acceptable and would try and get some qualification at whatever grade to cover myself.
