Are you interested in applying for postgraduate studies at the University of Plymouth for 2021?! I am your Postgrad Rep and I am here to tell you all about grad life. I have almost completed my Master of Research (MRes) degree in Marine Biology and I can give you advice about accommodation, the course, library resources, part-time work and so much more.

Postgraduate degrees - Do's and Don'ts

Deciding whether a postgrad degree is the best option for you can be challenging, especially if there are lots of options available! Here's a list of some of my do's and don'ts when it comes down to choosing a postgraduate degree.

Disclaimer: everyone will have their own opinions and only you know what’s best for yourself so these are just some guidelines which you can use.

Do's
- Look at the course content!! – This is such an important one. The course is probably going to be intense (not to scare you) but you need to choose something you know you will enjoy
- Identify if there are any specialists in your field that lecture/could be a potential supervisor that share a similar interest with you. You can always email them before applying to get a feel for their teaching and learn about previous students work
- Search for funding opportunities! Postgrad courses can be pricey so it can be a bonus if you can secure additional funding
- Attend open/applicant days. This is key!! It really helps to give you an idea about the environment you’ll be in and what to expect with the course
- Talk to past students

Don'ts
- Don’t rush your decision, take your time and make sure this is something you want to do, especially because there’s a lot of self-driven study and therefore you’ll need to be motivated
- Underestimate the workload!! Sometimes it’s easy to assume a masters will be less work/ stressful because you may already have a decent background knowledge of the field (don’t worry if you don’t) but it’s important to go into the postgrad degree with an open mind and willingness to learn! It will defo help
- Leave the application until the last minute! I did this and it made me stress out sooo much! Luckily I got a place, but some courses work on a first come, first serve basis, so check the deadlines

hi, I'm 17 soon 18. I will be applying to podiatry 2021, just finishing my personal statement and waiting for my reference. currently, I do biology, chemistry and film for my a-levels.

Of course! I’m not sure if it would be completely the same in the way you apply to university in your country but in the UK we apply through UCAS. After deciding that Plymouth was going to be one of my choices, I wrote my personal statement and then once that was done, it was sent off to all 5 choices. Then I just had to wait for responses. The application process isn’t too difficult. Let me know if you do have any questions. I’d be more than happy to answer them😊

If you answered YES to any of these questions then you may be interested in attending one of our virtual open days. I would recommend attending the open days as it’s super easy, especially as you don’t have to travel and can do it from the comfort of your home. Our next open day will be held on Saturday 28th November 2020 and you can register for our Virtual Open Day here.

What to expect at our open days:
- Chat to our academic staff
- Speak to current students on the course
- Enquire about the city
- Ask about teaching styles and what the assignments are like
