I have written this essay as practice for the same. It'd be great if you could give me some feedback on it.
TOPIC: Would society be better off if there were more scientists in positions of power
"Power blinds"
History is witness if the devastating actions men in power have taken; and of the harm intensive scientific development has done. No doubt, science has advanced by leaps and bounds. But it has come at a cost. We have lost jobs to automation, clean air to smog. We've been enslaved by the comfort that it gave us.
Today's era is of Artificial Intelligence, of gene editing, biometric patterns, genome cloning and inhabiting Mars. Disruptive, cutting-edge research and innovation has heralded in this new age of Technology. Scientists already have a great amount of resources at their dispense. Along with that, research funding has seen an enormous surge in the past few years. men, money, material - they have it all.
Amidst this, we must realise that, somewhere, a line has to be drawn. The possibilities of places scientists can lead us to are immense. but we need to keep a check on the degree of advancement. Our vision for this planet is one where, alongwith scientific progress, we have preserved our ecosystem and retained out human touch. But uncontrolled scientific development can bring back the pitiful days of Industrialization, commence a nuclear or genocidal war, or simply enslave the brain that created it - us!
If we have more scientists in positions of power, undoubtedly, human will have to live by the consequences of disruptive scientific activity to a level unparalleled in history.Today, owing to the fact that we have people from numerous walks of life leading us, we enjoy a sound economy, appropriate degree of disruption and a peaceful co-existance. We have managed to strike a balance between scientific progress and other aspects of life, which would not have been possible had there been men of science in the top league.
If the Avengers' movies taught us anything, it is this - Science and power form a deadly combination. The last time we went through intensive scientific activity, during the Age of Industrialization, the world plunged into one of the worst economic fallouts. The Recession is just another example of situation these erudite men cannot handle. Our leadership should be appropriately balanced so as to brace mankind for any situation that comes its way.
