Primary Education Applicants Scotland 2021

Hi there, this is a thread for those who will be hoping to apply for Primary Education in 2021. I had previously applied last year however have withdrawn my application as I decided to take a year out. I am hoping to apply to Dundee university, QMU, Edinburgh university, Strathclyde and Glasgow Uni next year. I hope to hear back from those of you who are applying for Primary Education next year!

Could I just confirm that this is the BA course?

Hi, I’m also applying for primary education in Scotland and at all the same universities apart from stirling instead of QMU. How have you found the application process so far? Have you written your personal statement yet? And what are your top unis, I’m struggling to draw comparisons because they are all so different! Also how do you feel about doing Gaelic at Edinburgh...?

I’ve only written a couple of drafts of my personal statement so far but I’m close to completing it. The application process has been ok, I haven’t had any issues yet. How are you finding it? I have decided to apply to Stirling instead of Edinburgh now due to the gaelic as I think it might be a lot more challenging. Also in regards to my top universities, I am struggling to draw comparisons too. Haven’t quite decided my first choice yet. Do you know which is your first choice?

Yeh I’m in the same place with my statement not qui finished but v close. I am applying to Edinburgh partially because I’m from Edinburgh and I like the uni but also because I think Gaelic ,although it’s going to be hard, will give me greater prospects for the future especially as I’d love to live and work in the highlands where Gaelic learning is being peruses by many primary schools. I don’t know which order I would place the unis because I like them all for different reasons but Dundee is defo last- for me I’m not keen on the city or uni and the teaching course doesn’t stand out massively. What I will say is I love the course as Strathclyde I feel like it’s really innovative and there lots of choice like in first year how you take 3 subjects, education and 2 others. There’s also good work experience! If you want to message on insta it might be easier, up to you though but just could be useful as none of my friends are applying to education and there are not many chats on here for education undergrad in Scotland. I am absolutely loving it! It’s quite fast paced after being in lockdown and out of school for a few months but even then it’s still so much fun! I would say in terms of Dundee when I was looking at unis the course itself it stood out quite a bit and I was surprised they are all quite different! It was the most hands on with the most placement time I believe. Also in this semester up till Xmas primary ed, social work and community Ed are in the same lectures for a values module and a working together module and it’s really interesting looking at scenarios where we’d work together and how we’d handle things etc. That’s two of the modules and then the 3rd you get the pick from quite a good range across the uni I’ve chosen politics because I loved higher mods at school! After Xmas we do 3 primary ed specific modules but it’s been fun to get a good range to start off with definitely working with social work and com Ed till Xmas has given an opportunity to make even more friends within groupchats etc outside my own course! I applied to Dundee, Aberdeen, Stirling, QMU and Glasgow. I got interviews for Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow. Stirling and QMU don’t interview so it was quite a while waiting on their decisions! I got my interviews in jan my offers for Dundee and Aberdeen in feb! I then withdrew from Glasgow because they were my top 2 then QMU gave me an offer I declined! I was disheartened when I was rejected by Stirling but I had applied for the Literacy specialism, they only give out 15 places per specialism and I said nothing about literacy in my statement so that’s probably where I went wrong! Yep don’t hesitate to ask anything!

I applied on the 18th of December (I remember because I was glad to get that statement out of my life haha) I got my first invitation from Glasgow and this was the 21st of jan so as far as I’m aware I think they do wait until after 15th for fair consideration but I’m not sure! What I would say is I got my Dundee invite on the 22nd of jan and the interview was 29th I was quite worried as 7 days seemed short notice to plan a 2 minute talk but in the end it turned out perfectly and it actually went better than my Aberdeen interview which was in feb both were quite scary for me as I hate doing talks in front of people (kids are different for some reason haha) but just remember everyone will be feeling the same! For practice of doing my talk I used voice notes to make sure I had enough to make it to 2 minutes and not too far over as they will stop you and let you know to finish. Thankfully voice notes was so useful I finished bang on the timer and they were quite impressed but that’s not too important just come across as really passionate and that’s what they seemed to want my interviewers were lovely one was a uni lecturer from the uni who is now my adviser of studies! (Guidance teacher) and a head teacher from a local primary school!
