Hi Divin,

I am currently a 2nd year student studying Psychology here at Surrey. Did you complete your undergraduate degree here or at another uni and what did you study?

My boyfriend has just completed his masters here at Surrey studying Cyber Security, I understand its a different masters however I can try and find out more information about what a masters is like and also see if there is anything helpful he may be able to advise

It would be very helpful if you can get me some information. I have completed my undergraduate degree (Electronics Engineering) from India, so my Masters is going to be a totally new experience. I did get a lot of information from the staff at the University of Surrey, but I would definitely like to hear from students. The placement route of the course has been suspended by the University, so how difficult it would it be to find a job in cybersecurity
Could you please ask him if it’s difficult for people without security clearance to find a job in Cybersecurity?

Hi Divin,
I have spoken to my boyfriend and has provided this to me to pass onto you

"I am a recent Masters graduate from the University of Surrey. I studied Criminology which specialised in cybercrime and cybersecurity. I took two modules related to information security, so hopefully I can be of some help. Although placements are understandingly suspended, this will not affect the likelihood of finding a job after graduating. The most important thing to show employers is that you can demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills related to the role you are applying for. This will normally need to be demonstrated in the job interview.

A lack of placement experience shouldn't be a concern too, as other students are in the same situation as you due to the pandemic. In relation to your concerns about security clearance, this stage only applies when the employer believes you will be a good fit for them. Therefore, not having the necessary clearance for the role will not limit your career opportunities as the employer will arrange you to be cleared if they want to hire you.

I hope this helps with your query, but if you have any other questions please let me know"

I hope this has been helpful! please let me know if there is anything else you would like to know

Hello Becca,

I have applied for the MSc Cybercrime Criminology and am awaiting result. I am from Bangalore, India and have 15+ yrs experience in IT Security and am intending to take this course for further specialisation in my career. I see your above post and would like to enquire on the prospects after completion of the course and its recognition in the industry. Also, if possible would like to have a conversation over a call to clarify few points I have.

It would be of immense value and great help at this moment to make an informed choice during the testing times.

Regards,

Reddy Venkatesh
Hi,The course in itself is quite difficult. Be prepared before you come. I would recommend completing CompTIA Nework and some online course cryptography before joining the Masters. If you have CompTIA Security , then the course would be easier for you. If you're taking cloud computing as optional, then plan to take some Cloud certification.Professors are good, but due to the paucity of time and wide syllabus, there is not much they can do. We got to be well prepared.Job prospects are excellent if you have the required certifications.
