wouldn't that mean the cork is 0p and the bottle and cork doesnt add up to £10

The bottle is £9 more than the cork. If the cork is £1 then the botttle is £10 so it’s not £1. If it’s 50p per cork then the bottle is worth £9.50 as your questions says. Meaning both together is £10.
