Unlikely that next of kin have to pay for it but their valuable items (house, cars etc.) will be repossessed, until the value of the loan is repaid.

The loan gets cancelled (on the receipt of evidence) if the recipient dies.

A loan overpayment would probably need to be returned, as is the standard requirements if you drop out, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
