As a student myself:

Volvo S40/60: rapid, and the insurance costs nothing - not great mpg though
Saab 9-3: Better than a Volvo, but cost more to insure
citroen c5: Literally cost nothing to ensure, and the 2007+ models look alright and drive amazingly. The one I test drove told you whether you could fit into a parking space as you drove past

I'm looking for something similar as the peugeut 308 2009 like something in that size that has 4 doors.

Maybe under 1,500 pounds is not reasonable, so what about a budget 2000 pounds

I just don't prefer hatchbacks as I find them uncomfortable to drive in.

Okay, this is going sound mad but bare with me please :frown:
I don't like a car in that length, if that makes sense. just something in that size but a 4 seater.
