Counselling experiences

I was just wondering what people’s experiences were about counselling? Have you found that it’s something that makes you more sensitive about what you’re dealing with before it gets better?
I've been to private counselling and CAMHS, I hated CAMHS he just yelled at me but privately was ok. Yeah well it does sting initially but soon you're grateful and you can improve and grow and get better. It depends on the counsellor, it's whoever works best for you.

I’ve recently had my second counselling session so I know it’s still way too early to see results. I just feel a lot more hypersensitive mainly tearful about things, they’re not necessarily directly linked to why I’m seeing a counsellor. I was just wondering if that was a common experience?

Yeah, it hurts and you suddenly realise what's going on. I had that too.

Yeah it’s probably what it is. Although it’s something I’ve always reflected on it’s probably highlighted how different my life in general would have been if certain things hadn’t of happened

Yeah, I always wonder what it would be like if a certain event when I was 8 hadn't happened, it's affected me for life and now I can barely do anything because of it, that's why I need therapy

My experience is that it’s all about your personal rapport with the counsellor. If you find someone that helps you see a bit of perspective, shows you some strategies and you have a bit of humour together, then it can help. I think there could be something to be said for having matching criteria with your counsellor. It can work but also nobody has a magic wand.

I feel you, I had a medical issue that wasn’t investigated properly when I was younger even though I kept going to my gp. I hope therapy is helping to make a positive difference

The person I’m seeing is really nice and I’ve felt I’ve been able to be pretty open. Yeah I hoping for some strategies mainly as I do reflect on it quite a lot, yeah I think humour is the way forward. I think we have the same criteria, their specialisms are to do with a lot of the issues I’m struggling with. I have heard that it can make it worse for a period of time because you’re thinking about it more which is possibly my case

Funnily enough I had one today and it was so much easier, having said that I still found the previous sessions useful just intense because of the nature of it

I did private because I didn’t want to wait months to be diagnosed with autism
