Best uni for product design degree

Hi, I want to do product design in uni, currently doing maths, art and sociology a level. Hopping to get aab/abb grades. Anyone have any idea which unis are known for being good at product design or any sort of design degrees (not art!) I rlly don’t want to do art as a degree lol. However design Id do just not art.

There are lots of unis that do Design. As pp suggested you look at Loughborough as one of your potential choices, I thought I'd send you a link to our Design School information here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/design-school/
We offer Design, Product Design and Technology and also Industrial Design. All courses have typical entry requirements of ABB and require a portfolio submission.

I heard about your uni being really good for product design! However the course I want to do said I needed maths and either product design, physics or engineering. maths I have however I don’t do any of the other 3 but I do art and design. I’m not sure on how strict it is in terms of subject requirement however I did see that you offer a foundation year for those who didn’t take the required subjects. Do you recon i would have to do the foundation year or could I get in with my subjects?

Thank you for the help! I did take product design at gcse however my sixth form didn’t offer it at a level. I also am doing design work experience soon and might do an epq and try and incorporate product design into it.

I take it you're referring to Product Design Engineering?

Loughborough & Brunel are the places most people consider the top 2 places for Product Design. Product Design Engineering is an engineering degree so possibly not what you mean, but if so Imperial, Loughborough, Nottingham and quite a few other unis do PDE.

Product Design BSc you need Maths or Physics plus an art / design Alevel.

without maths or physics look at Industrial Design - 80% the same course at Loughborough & Brunel. Lots of crossover but slightly more focus on the design side, less electronics & mechanics but still some.

some places do BA or BSc Product Design. Nottingham Trent does this. UAL. Leeds, Sussex, Edinburgh, Manchester Met, UWE.

At Sussex, we have both BA and BSc (Hons) Product Design courses that may be of interest to you.
Our typical A-level offer is ABB-BBB for BA Product Design (Hons) and BSc Product Design (Hons).

For subjects, A-levels should include Art or a design subject normally at grade B. However, you will still be considered without A-levels in these areas but will need to demonstrate a strong, recent background in art and design through other means.

The main difference between the courses is that for the BSc course, you learn to apply advanced mathematical and engineering principles along with human-based methods to evaluate, analyse and design material objects, systems and environments. For the BA course, you learn to apply foundational mathematical and engineering principles along with human-based methods to evaluate, analyse and design material objects, systems and environments.

Here at Manchester Met, we offer BA(Hons) Product Design and BA(Hons) Product Design and Craft! These courses are taught at our Manchester School of Art, which is now apart of Manchester Metropolitan University. Manchester School of Art is the second oldest design school in Britain, established to provide design training to the manufacturing industry, we offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are still very much influenced by the specialist needs of industry to provide our students with the essential skills and knowledge for their chosen career.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do and RIBA award-winning Benzie Building, where you would study these courses has been designed with this at its core. It provides a unique community environment for our students to not only explore their own discipline but to watch, listen and learn from those working in other disciplines. The entry requirements for BA(Hons) Product Design and BA(Hons) Product Design and Craft are: 104-112 UCAS points i.e BBC/BCC in addition we require GCSE English Language at Grade C/4 or above. As part of the application process you will also be required to submit a portfolio.
