Is the displayed characteristic of a specie the same as the physical appearance of a specie?

I presume displayed characteristic relates to behaviour, whilst physical appearance relates to, well, physical appearance.

No necessarily, displayed characteristics implies traits that a species utilises, presumably to survive and thrive. On a micro-level, it could include cellular and tissue organisation, cellular energetics, homeostasis, heredity etc. On a macro-level, movement, sensitivity, responsiveness, etc. These will differ from species to species.
