How is Warwick for Biomed?

I'm still waiting for a response from them but unfortunately, due to no open days this year, I honestly don't know much about Warwick's life sciences department. It definitely excels in subjects like maths and economics.
Does anyone know how Warwick is in the life sciences? I've also received an offer from KCL so I'm stuck on which uni is more highly regarded in these subjects.
Graduated from Warwick last June, Biochem. Biochem and Biomed have 90% same modules in Year 1 so I can help.

The Life Science department is probably Warwicks more quiet dept. It doesn't get the recognition like Maths, Economics, Business etc do but its a very good department in terms of tutors, campus, student support, as well as the actual Biomed course.

Best part of the dept is that the tutors, from my experience, were VERY very flexible and supportive with students regarding COVID issues and other things throughout my degree. If there were problems with students, I found they were more responsive and found solutions faster than other depts in the uni. I felt the tutors genuinely cared for the bio students - this might be something you should consider, assuming there will be more issues about studying/covid/flexibility etc that might come about when you join.

In terms of which uni has better reputation for life science - doesn't matter that much if you find a career in an unrelated field (I'm in finance). If you want a career in research/med, just get a 1st + work experience. Warwick is a good uni enough uni. KCL is generally a more reputable uni though (probably internationally)

Thanks so much for the reply:smile:
So would you say the life sciences, maths, econ/business departments are generally more highly regarded than say the social sciences or law?
Also, may I ask how you ended up going to finance? Does Warwick offer placement years where you can actually get work experience? Their website says students have gone to pharmaceutical companies like Astrazeneca.

Warwick is best known for its Maths, Econ, and Business depts. Definitely not know for their Life Science dept but it is still one of the best in the country, and most up-to-date (research, new buildings and tech) in the uni.

I got my job by applying for grad schemes. Many of my course mates got roles in the Big 4 accounting firms. There are opportunities to go abroad or take a year in industry to do whatever you want - I know some who did their year in GSK, and some did teaching!

Depends what you want to experience in your 3 years of uni. Do you have an idea? I might be able to point out what and what you might not get in Warwick.

Personally, I didn't necessarily enjoy Biochem (not bc it was a bad course, I just
didn't care about the subject - I picked it as I was good at Biology and Chemistry at A-levels), but I enjoyed the lifestyle I had with the environment I was surrounded in around the uni. Realistically, Biochem is incredibly content heavy, and also very daunting when it gets complex and technical. I personally didn't have enough time for extracurriculars but I was able to socialise anyway. I assume this would be the case for other unis too - deffos think about this if you want your uni exp to be more centered around sports, friends etc.

I have offers from city unis and Warwick is actually the only campus uni I am waiting to hear from. Would you say you prefer campus life? Did you ever feel like you were restricted in terms of what you could do? I know you can join societies and Leamington Spa is quite a popular destination for students but if you had the chance would you have preferred a fast-paced city with endless things to do?

Definitely not. I loved the campus and Leamington Spa so much. Everytime I went to stay with friend in city unis (Bristol etc.), I always felt glad I picked Warwick. Never felt restricted as you'd be in the midlands so generally close to major cities like Birmingham and London, plus there were plenty of gyms, pubs and clubs around there anyway (which is all we needed). I guess Warwickshire county/ Coventry area provides you with a good set of things to do - eg. lots of outdoor places nearby, as well as shopping, and clubs. Bare in mind its a very cheap area to live in (if that's something you're thinking of too). My first year campus room was around £400 a month, and once we moved to Leamington it was roughly £400p/m (each) too, in nice houses. Youd be lucky to find students houses in city unis for that cheap.

Sounds like you'd fit into campus. There are plenty of little campus-run cafes and restaurants available on campus where you can hang out, and plenty in Leamington Spa (where 2nd/3rd years live) - and you can get jobs there too - the pay is slightly more than NMW per hour I believe
