NHS bursary for medical student

Hi,

I am a prospective/ aspiring medic applying for student finance to kick start my medical school.

During the application, I actually found out that I am eligible for only minimum maintenance loan of £6166 according to my parents income. I understand my parents would have to contribute the rest to meet the potential full maintenance loan amount.

Thinking ahead I am aware that I am entitled to apply for NHS bursary in 5th/6th year where tuition fees, means tested bursary and non means tested bursary (£1000) will become applicable. My query is regarding means tested bursary. I can’t find a calculator for this. I am thinking I may not be eligible for the means tested bursary as I am not eligible for the full student finance maintenance loan. Does the calculation for means tested bursary work the same way as the maintenance loan?

Further I also understand, I can apply for reduced maintenance loan from student finance in my 5/6th during the time NHS bursary is applicable. How do I calculate the amount of loan I will get in these years.

Please correct any information above if I am wrong. Just trying my best to plan ahead as I am worried about money during university years. Thanks

I would suggest that for most people expecting your parents to make up the full amount would be excessive. The full loan is very very generous you definitely don't need that much.

As above. You'd most likely be eligible for the £1000 grant and the £3263 student loan in years 5 and 6, so a big cut at a time when you may have more course-related costs.

Thank you. I will look over the pages.

Could I ask about years 5 and 6, the reduced maintenance loan from SFE, is that means tested or is it a set amount (£3263) that every medical student may be eligible to apply for.

That might be the maximum actually, I don't know I'm afraid.

Thanks, it’s okay, I just have to factor in it is going to be less in years 5 and 6.
