There are 5 starters, 8 main courses and some desserts on the menu.
Jack is going to choose one starter, one main course and one dessert.
He says there are 240 ways that he can choose his starter, his main course and his dessert.
Could Jack be correct?

You don't know how many desserts there are so call the number, n.

So, how many possible combinations are there (as a function of n)?

Can this equal 240? What would n have to be? Is this possible?

instead of putting it as n would you be able to put it as d because he is looking for the number of desserts and if he gets a decimal would it be incorrect or correct?

You can use whatever letter you like - just put in your working "Let d be the number of desserts", and carry on from there.

Well can you order a non-integer number of desserts?
