How do people become Presidents, Vice Presidents etc. in Uni Societies?

What is the process generally like?

There's usually an application form advertised and sent out when the SU is ready to start taking applications for a role. Then there is a period where candidates can campaign for their role, and there is normally some events that run, such as 'meet the candidates' events, where you make your campaign about why you want that role/ about your manifesto, etc. Then there will be a period of voting, where all students in the University will be given the chance to vote for which candidate they would like to elect, followed by a counting of votes. The results are then announced and the winner is elected.

That sounds more like the process for becoming President/Vice President of the whole SU.

Roles in societies, including the President and Vice President, are also done by election. It’s normally at a meeting called an AGM (annual general meeting), although some societies have online voting forms instead. Only people who are members of the society can vote, not every student at the uni.

Things like manifestos and meet the candidates events may happen for some very big societies, but most societies will just have very short speeches at the AGM or a couple of paragraphs about why you want the role.
