Am I wrong to try to use v^2=u^2+2as for this, with u and a being perp to the slope instead of parallel, and therefore v is 0?

If you use v^2 = u^2 +2as perpendicular to the slope, you can find the maximum height, but you really need to relate this to the parallel to the slope distance. Time to peak would be a more natural/direct way of doing this rather than peak height? This is what the model solution seems to do.

So its not incorrect to use it, but its a less direct way and generally you choose your suvat equation to directly relate the variables of interest, rather than for solving for ones you dont really need.
