Yup, I'd probalby have said
Initial KE = Final KE + GPE + Work done
To be clear about the signs as that would the be conservation of energy equation, but a) is right.

Checking b) now.

intital EK + initial Ep - work done (air resistance) = final Ek

I'd always do it in terms of constant (conservation) of energy.
Final KE + workdone = Initial KE + GPE
GPE is measured relative to the floor and the work done is positive moving downwards. So
Final KE = Initial KE + GPE - workdone
where each of these terms should be positive. What do you get if you do that?
