ive got a mechanics question

what does it mean when it says Taking as positive Deceleration = α
that does this mean and imply?

What do you interpret it as? It describes a positive direction.
I can guess the question, but care to give any more information?

Are we playing guess the question?

Should you take up or down as positive? It doesn't matter in the end, but you have to choose a direction as being positive in your working.

Arrows are pretty normal tool used in mechanics to denote the direction of a vector.

TBH often in complex systems you can have many different bodies or fluids moving with different magnitudes & directions, arrows are pretty universally understood.

Generally speaking, if you have several forces acting on a system it will usually either make sense to choose the positive direction as the one in which motion is taking place (or in which deceleration is taking place if the forces are opposing motion), or alternatively with lots of forces choose the direction in which the majority of forces are acting. That way, you end up with fewer negative signs involved, and consequently less danger of silly errors in your working out.

that explains it thanks, main reason is to get less negative values mainly when its a deceleration
