Flatmate is trying to encourage me to move out?

I've been living in my flat for about a year now which I share with one flatmate. I was planning on living there until the end of my degree (I have 2 more years left of my 4-year course) but twice now in the last couple of months he keeps asking whether I'm moving out or have any plans to move back home in the summer (despite everything opening-up and so I have no real reason to move locations). He recently mentioned that he wants to keep the flat and start socialising and dating, which I have absolutely no problem with, especially since I had mentioned that I'm going to start doing extra classes, job hunting and online dating, myself. I thought everything was going well between us as friends but he texted me saying that 'we're different people with different energies' and that we don't 'work well as flatmates'. I don't have friends up here in Dundee and I don't feel like I can cope with the stress of moving and starting all over again, but I feel like I'm taking up space and that he doesn't like me which is only making more stressed (since we live together). What should I do?

Is he your landlord? If not just tell him you’re planning on staying. If he’s the landlord you need to understand the contractual obligations. Clearly he doesn’t feel it’s working out as well as you do as flat companions, but this is tough if you’re happy.

He's not my landlord, he's just been there a year longer than I have.
Is he also a fellow tenant with no connection to the property owner or lettings agent?
If yes, calmly tell him that you don't plan to move out of the flat or visit family during the holidays.
Then politely let him know that you will be happy to replace him with a new flatmate if he wants to leave before the tenancy ends and move into his own private accomodation or live with his friends.

In which case just say you’re very happy and plan to stay till the end of your course
