Help! (History vs. Veterinary nursing)

Hi so I’m not sure wether to take a history degree or undertake a degree in veterinary nursing- I love history and would love to do a degree in it as I find it much more interesting than science etc however my entire family and all family friends are concerned there are no jobs afterwards- I just wondered if someone could help by giving me advice- I love animals however I’m so undecided as to which degree to undertake
I also have an offer for history at Leeds however I’d need to go through clearing to do a veterinary nursing degree
Thanks

1) I love history ....... are concerned there are no jobs afterwards
2) I love animals.
3) go through clearing to do a veterinary nursing degree

1) You will find History graduates in almost every career are you can think of. Degree study is not just about 'subject' - its mostly about learning how to think, argue/reason/discuss, and 'having your brain stretched'. This is what employers want - not the History knowledge but what are known as 'higher thinking skills' and why you see job ads that say 'Graduate - any discipline', because the thinking skills are universal.
2) Then dont do Vet. Animals die, its hard, dirty work and they dont say thank you.
3) What relevant work experience do you have? You'll need at least 2 weeks of working in a Vet/animal clinic and preferably also 'another setting' such as stables. kennels, RSPCA etc. You need this to show that you are realistic about what the job involves - and that you can cope with it. Its rare for Vet Nursing to be in Clearing because most courses will not have vacancies or be willing to interview anyone in the middle of Clearing.

I have loads of work experience in veterinary settings as this was something I wanted to do but don’t have the grades for- i either want to do veterinary nursing degree or history degree however if I couldn’t get in through clearing I’d take a gap year and also have a few more days to apply via extra but I’m really not sure which I’d prefer and I’m looking for advice on which would be better career prospects wise
But thank you very much- I’ve done my research into many other degrees and am also thinking about bioveterinary science
(I’ve amended the thread title to hopefully attract some more replies.)

I agree with the above, I used to work in financial services and no one had a related degree. A degree subject that you’re passionate about with a decent final classification is handy to a broad range of careers.
Hi!
I’ve decided to take gap year and apply for vet nursing September 2022 as I didn’t know what uni and Covid would be like this September! It is really up to you but just as a heads up, vet nursing is a very competitive degree to get into and you have to be very passionate about it. It’s also important you get work experience as many say they want to do veterinary sciences but after seeing what it’s really like, they change their mind. So if you want to do a vet nurse degree you must be very interested and willing in the vet nurse role and not choose to do it because you do not have the grades for a Vet (this puts the interviewer at uni off!). Also like said above, vet nursing in clearing is very rare due to its popularity! Hope this helps!
