Misinformation

What are the rules on misinformation and where can I find them?

I tried asking the CS weeks ago but got totally ignored.

I think TSR should crack down on it much harder than it currently does. There are a handful of users in the society forums who regurgitate the same "ideas", either creating similar threads on a weekly or monthly basis or taking over existing ones with the same "ideas". When it is pointed out that with some of those "ideas" that they may be mistaken, it quickly begins a tirade of circular arguments with said individuals that spans all those threads. Those individuals have been warned about misinformation by multiple users and some volunteers have even spoken out and said they will not engage with them anymore.

I understand that moderation is difficult on some issues which divide opinion but I cannot shake the feeling that a small number of users simply joined the forums in the last year to create arguments as well as spread misinformation.
Hiya,

Thanks for your feedback,

Yes we are aware that currently there are no rigid guidelines on misinformation, with this in mind, this is being reviewed currently and further details around this will be released soon.

Despite there being no guidelines in place, content that is reported by users and that staff see on site, that is potentially harmful to the community, will be removed.

Thanks

Please can you give a rough estimate on what you consider as "soon" because from my experience of TSR "soon" means anything from next week to indefinite.

It's worth mentioning, we're currently in a period of reviewing our moderation, and will be sharing information about this, likely early next year.

The most worrying misinformation pertains to COVID. With attention to the fact that COVID is an ongoing, life-threatening crisis, what is your schedule for this review?

Just to add some information with the post you're quoting from November 2019: the review of moderation then was intended to be communicated during early 2020. However, my understanding is that Covid concerns in early 2020 forced TSR to change priorities and the moderation review was dropped where it was. Combined with staffing issues that have been apparent since then, it was never resumed. The current work being done is (as far as I can gather) in place of the previous review and I think it is worth noting that new members of staff at a company aren't responsible for previous decisions (you will have noted Pink Unicorn has joined the site this year). I too would love to have a sense of when we may hear the outcome, but wanted to pre-curse that request with more information about the stuff you're quoting as context.

Heya,

I understand your frustrations. COVID meant priorities did lie elsewhere and rightly so, which meant certain reviews and implementing changes were put on hold. I hope this is something you can understand.

As you can see from my job title, which is still under 3 months old. I focus on the safeguarding element of the site which includes reviewing and updating documents such as the community guidelines. This isn't something I want to rush either. My timeline is to get updates out by September.

thanks

So to clarify, we are hopeful that an issue raised in 2019 will be addressed by the latter half of 2021 or maybe 2022

That's the opposite of what I was clarifying.

Please explain
In the current state of play:
Sources are required (ideally) in the OP of any news thread:

When a claim is being made as fact, it is good practice in a debate to provide a source for that claim. This isn't always possible. But if something is going to be accepted as a premise on which to debate then it is important for that premise to be solid (ie an undisputed fact).

Personal opinions, provided they aren't offensive, are always welcome. Offensive opinions can be anything from "let's destroy everyone with a hearing impairment" to "I think you look extremely ugly". I chose these two as I would find them offensive, since I have a hearing impairment myself, and am also incredibly beautiful.

I am also incredibly beautiful.

Do you have a source for that?

November 2019: Information shared that there is a review of moderation on TSR happening currently. With an intended outcome of "early next year".
Early 2020: Covid happens and TSRs priorities change. Moderation review stops in its tracks and is never resumed.
April 2021: Pink Unicorn is appointed as Community and Safeguarding Manager. One aspect of this newly created role is being responsible for Moderation, a review into which then begins.
September 2021: PU aims for an update on the progress of this review.

The point is, it's not taking 2-3 years to get the same thing done, because for over 12 months nothing was being done at all. It is looking like 3 months to restart and complete a process that was attempted in the past but was not completed at the time.

The review still started in 2019 and has yet to be finalised - I don't see why Covid paused the review tbh, it's not like the team were busy moderating the Covid Megathead

It was finalised when it stopped. I deliberately use the word stopped, not paused.
I shan't be explaining the reasoning for it stopping because that wasn't a decision I was party to.
The current review started in April at the earliest.

I fully understand and appreciate the struggles of the past year or so.

Excellent, I wish you all the best in your endeavour and look forward to your updates in the coming months :h:

How about personal opinions that could lead others to make dangerous health choices? Are those welcome?

It didn't quite pause entirely from my understanding, part of their commitment to BLM;

Review of race, religion, gender, sexuality guidelines. Our Moderation Team do a great job of moderating to current guidelines, but it’s clear the guidelines themselves need to be reviewed. This does take time as it needs a lot of consideration, and by more people than just us. We’ll be getting input from specialist organisations, using examples from real conversations in the community happening currently, working with our volunteers and using the results of the survey (below) to do this.

And they did a survey for it back in Nov 2020.

If you feel a post is harmful to the community, report it. :yy:
The moderation team on the report queue will decide if it is in breach of community guidelines or not.
