ACCA or CIMA

Hi,

I'm looking for advise on whether to studying CIMA or ACCA. I'm interested in becoming either a financial accountant, management accountant or exec in the future. I don't mind studying tax and audit but I wouldn't want to become a tax accountant or an auditor. Looking through the CIMA syllabus there doesn't seem to be much technical accounting, which worries me! However ACCA doesn't seem to prepare you for the more analytical side of accountancy? I'm currently in industry working in FP&A but also worked in financial control.

I've done lots of googling but changing my mind every half hour or so 😂

If you want to be a financial accountant, study ACCA.
If you want to be a management accountant, you could study either. ACCA will probably give you a more solid understanding of accounting which is still useful as a management accountant. However, CIMA might give you more in terms of some of the skills used by management accountants.

I don't think that many people in your position would ever find any real difference in their career paths one way or the other. I don't think its one of those questions you can find the answer online as lots of people who comment on such threads have no background in the profession but don't make that clear when posting.

Do you have any particular or unusual career or life aspirations which may make a difference?

It sounds like ACCA will be better suited as you can study up to the ‘options’ point having covered basic tax and audit and then choose where you want to specialise, Audit and tax or management accounting and financial management.

CIMA, which I have part completed before stopping to complete a masters is more preferable to me because I don’t care about the technical side of accounting, I’m more interested in the business/commercial side.
