Hi, I'm thinking of applying to a geography degree at Exeter for the 2022 entry. looking on the uni website I've seen that a BSc Geography is offered as well as a BSc/BA Geography course. aside from the fact that they're taught at different campuses, what would be the differences between these courses? also seeing as by taking just the BSc course, you can still pick modules from the BA side, I'm just a bit confused. thanks!

Great to hear you are thinking of applying to study Geography. Thank you for your question - a lot of prospective students ask me about this.

We have various Geography programmes as you pointed out. Our BA and BSc programmes are based at Streatham whereas the BA/BSc programme is based at Penryn. The different campuses have different academics with different research interests, so you will find in later years the optional modules will differ. I would recommend looking at the different departments academics research interests and current modules lists to get a sense of what they each cover. If you have areas you really want to cover it is well worth ensuring that the course you want to apply for covers it. Other things it is worth mentioning is that Penryn tends to have smaller class sizes and as such a better staff:student ratio. On the flip side this does mean the Streatham programme is larger and has more optional modules. It is down to you what things you value you most when making decisions about which course works best for you.

Regarding the difference between opting for a BA or BSc as opposed to a degree title which is undecided yet (BA/BSc) it depends again on your preference. If you go for the BSc you will start to specialise in Physical Geography from day 1. Although you have the choice to take some human modules (and this will be the case for all years of your programme) and elements of Human Geography will be covered in core modules you will start to focus more on Physical immediately. In comparison opting for BA/BSc means that depending on which optional modules you choose over the three years, and the topic of your dissertation you may graduate with a BA or BSc. So it depends if you know what you want to specialise in yet, or are still making up your mind.

Firstly, I am sorry it has taken me quite so long to get back to you. If you have not already got the answer elsewhere I hope I can help you now.

We don’t really have any primary recruiters, as our cohort is very diverse and the roles they secure post-graduation are also very varied. Around 10-15% will secure roles in consultancy, including with firms such as Accenture, Deloitte and PwC. Otherwise graduates have gone on to work with some of our corporate partners, including IBM, Avenade and Unilever, and some have started up or developed their own businesses. A few will also go on to further education (PhD). Of the last cohort surveyed (2020), 88% of our graduates were employed within 6 months of graduation.

Some examples of post-graduation roles over the last 10 years are listed below (which gives a good idea of the diversity):

Can you tell me when the next open days are going to be? Trying to plan for virtual or in person (have been for a campus tour over the summer) open day.
Also I managed to attend two talks at the June Open day but would like to know if they were recorded and are on the Exeter uni site as I couldn't go to all the ones I was interested in.

Hello! I'm currently studying Economics, Politics and Italian A-Level and am looking at doing Economics and International relations/management at uni. I love Exeter uni and am really keen on going there but my GCSE maths grade is a 4 which does not meet the standard 5 so I'm slightly worried that I'm going to be disadvantaged when compared to the many other students who also apply. I know that the Exeter Business School is highly regarded so it would be really helpful if I could get any advice on the grades side of it and also any extras which could help my application. :smile:

I'm looking to study Economics and Finance at Exeter university. The enter requirements for this course are A*AA - AAA. What is the likelihood of getting an offer with A level predicted grades AAA with Economics, Maths and Spanish. I have one extra curricular activity that will add to my UCAS points but other than that none of my other activities are included in the UCAS points calculator.

Generally what UCAS point score is required for an offer to study Economics at Exeter university. I'm trying to judge if there is much point in applying if I don't have an A*.

I would also like to know if the university offers any options to continue to study Spanish alongside graduate course - either as a joint degree or some part of my undergraduate degree, or then as an extra society or club that I could join.
Hi, I've taken 2 (unvoluntary) gap years following studying A-Levels in Sociology (A*), Politics (A*), English Language (A) and Psychology (B) and I'm applying for History and Politics at the Penryn Campus.

Exeter is my first choice so I'd love to get an offer but I am worried about whether sporting teams - specifically throwers in athletics - compete and train as much as, for example, sprinters on the Streatham campus. The social medias and websites seem to have such a big emphasis on running so I'd hate to get there and not be training or competing in throwing.

Thank you for your question and interest in the University of Exeter. Our typical offer for Economics is A*AA - AAA with grade 5 at GCSE English and B at A Level Mathematics. Your GCSE Mathematics grade should not affect your likelihood of getting an offer provided you meet these other conditions. Hope this reassure you a little. We make our decisions based upon three A level grades (or equivalent qualifications). We do not use tariff points, so although these will certainly support your application they will not count towards your offer, if you are successful in getting one from the University of Exeter. The likelihood can vary year on year dependant on how the cohort performs, which is why we tend to have a grade range. As it can vary year to year how a cohort performs it is difficult for us to make any guarantees on the likelihood of making students, particularly without seeing their whole application in context. I am sorry I cannot provide a firmed answer than this at this time.

It is possible to take modules outside of your subject; many student use this option to study languages. Alternatively, we do offer evening language classes, which students can join at a discounted price. We also have a Hispanic Society which alongside it social programme rubs conversation classes. So there should be plenty of opportunities for you to continue with your Spanish.

Please may I clarify - would it be possible for me to do a joint degree with Economics and Spanish with Economics as the Major and Spanish as the Minor (3:1). If so, then would the degree then be a 4 year degree with Year 3 being a year abroad?

Scottish universities offer the option to change your path at the end of year 2. At the end of year 2 you finalise whether you will be doing single or joint honours and in which subject(s). Do English universities offer the option to re-evaluate your course choice at some point during the course or is the course that you choose when you apply final?

So you can not apply for a joint honours programme. You would have the choice to do some units outside of your subject instead of Economics optional modules. This would not include a year abroad option. You could consider our Flexible Combined Honours programme; this would enable you to combine up to three subjects (two in your first year) and build your own degree. Economics and languages can be combined. It is also possible to apply for year aboard with this programme. English universities do not typically allow you to change your course after your first year. It is technically possible, but not a standard choice, any if allowed may require you to re-do year 1 to ensure you have all the core knowledge for that course. Flexible Combined Honours does allow you to build your own degree, so there is a chance to perhaps re-focus the optional modules you take, but to be accepted on to second year modules you may sometimes be required to have done specific first year modules. However, it gives you some flexibility to amend what you study in second and third year. I would recommend that you apply for a course that you plan to study for the duration of your degree, but know that if it doesn't work out there might be a chance to change.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me please? I'm interested in doing the combined honours, in particular TESOL but I see this is only a minor. So does that mean if I choose to study English as well for example, it would be mostly English with a little bit of TESOL? I don't really understand how it all works. Thanks, Kerri
