I think they wanted you to think about z in mod-arg form, so z^3 has the modulus cubed and the arg tripled. So its fairly easy to see
|z|>1
and by thinking about what happens when you triple the boundary of each quadrant (0-90, 90-180, ...) its easy to see z cant lie in the first quadrant if 360 > arg(z^3) > 315, but could lie in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
