Do Uni's Check your social accounts, like reddit or instagram

I mean unless someone shows them something you posted that is terrible like racism then they'd probably investigate it
I can't imagine they would do so routinely.

However (rightly or wrongly), if you were getting negative online attention for posting controversial things, I imagine they might potentially be concerned.

No, that would be incredibly time consuming and a breach of GDPR.
I think some might out of curiosity on their side.
I know some girls that work in admin that seem to stalk some candidates on their off time.
So yes the possibility is there.
But unless as stated above, you post sexist/racist etc content on your socials, I think you have nothing to worry about realistically speaking...

Which is why you probably want to make your privacy settings private on all socials, unless you dont mind making it public and have nothing serious to hide...

As stated, normally you dont have time neither would you be concerned in doing a full background social check on students, its just not realistic.

They dont, unless they have tech savy people that really want to know who your online identity is.

If you link your accounts to google platform such as on reddit, then your email adress can be traced to your reddit account.

People use the same email for FB/Snapchat/Instagram/Reddit etc etc.
You can literally know a lot about a person if you know their emails and know where to look from there on...

No. They don’t have the time and it’s of no relevance or interest to them.

If something sketchy came to light, they might look into it to see if it fell foul of their code of conduct.

Most unis do not routinely search for students social media profiles.
So many social media accounts are default set to private or don't include any photos/identifiable information, it would be very difficult to prove who the profile belongs to.
However, many employers and a few school teachers & uni lecturers with a vendetta do make a habit of searching for social media accounts.

I agree, if students stalk other students in private, then makes you think the people in admin dont do the same?

I think you are overestimating how interesting the average 18 year old’s Instagram is to a grown adult.
True, but just because you dont do it, doesnt mean others wont/can etc.
I don't know about unis, but employers absolutely will search your social media history (or contract a specialist 3rd party to do it for them).

I used to work in the pharmaceutical industry, and I learned of a job applicant who wasn't hired because one of her Facebook friends followed an animal rights group on FB. Of course the applicant wasn't told that this was the reason she wasn't hired. But it shows you the lengths companies will go to when doing background checks on you, and how little it takes for you to be excluded.

If they weren’t told, how do we know that this was the reason? It seems a bit tenuous to disqualify credible candidates because of accounts that their friends follow.

No surprises that pharmaceutical company is carrying out illegal background checks on people, probably a mercy they weren't hired at such an unscrupulous company.

My friends wife worked for the agency that the company was hiring through, which was how I found out.

Animal rights activists target pharmaceutical companies because they test on animals (because its the law), and my old company had problems a few times with protesters. I'm not saying it's right that someone was not hired for that reason, but that's why.
When uni checks my TSR account :shock:
