Hello!

Was wondering if anyone else here is applying for courses at Escape starting in 2022  I'm applying for The Art of Video Games BA!

Hi @omaiie!

It's SO great to hear that you're interested in Escape Studios! My name is Rohnak and I'm a Student Rep, who is also in their second year of BA The Art of Computer Animation. If you have any questions about Escape or the Game Art course I'd be glad to answer them!
Good luck with your application and the rest of your school year!

P.S. As an icebreaker, what's your favourite videogame? Mine's Spider-Man PS4!

Hi, thanks! My favourite game is always changing, but at the moment I'm a really big fan of Hollow Knight  Octopath Traveler's another long-time favourite of mine! I tend to lean towards JRPGs/indie stuff haha

I'm hoping to attend the Open Day next month as I'd like to ask a few specific questions in person but I'd be happy to just hear about your general experience at Escape! What's the student experience like in terms of clubs and other events like the introductory week in the first year? And how have you managed living in London with stuff like commuting to Escape/money etc. (I think that's my biggest concern at the moment!)

I suppose a slightly more general question in terms of university applications would be if there's anywhere else I can find fellow applicants online ^^" I get the impression there isn't that much activity regarding this particular college here haha, but the threads for my other choices aren't so active yet either

Thanks in advance

Hi again!

I'd definitely be super happy to talk about my experience at Escape Studios so far! My first year was mostly online due to "current world events" but the second has been a return to normal apart from the obvious precautions. We had a mixed in-person and online Fresher's Week this year, with events such as an Online Escape Room and a get-together at a rooftop bar. Going forward into the year, you can expect a mixture of online and in-person activities such as e-sports competitions, art competitions, exclusive early screenings for movies, and talks with industry professionals. I expect a shift towards more in-person stuff as the situation gets better.

Clubs and societies are also a big part of the student experience at Escape. I know that there's a big emphasis within Escape to make sure students get to experience the fun social side of university, despite our uniqueness when compared to the average campus. There are lots of societies related to topics such as gaming, film, LGBT+, investing, Dungeons and Dragons, and lots more! We even have a Model UN club! Our societies are overseen by the PCSA (Pearson College Student Association) who handle clubs, events, and other fun stuff along those lines. The same set of clubs and societies are available to students from Escape Studios and Pearson Business School, so it's a great way to meet new people. If there isn't a club for a specific interest you have, you can make the club yourself! Friends of mine have plans for a LEGO club and Theatre club. Meanwhile I've been enjoying taking part in the Inktober drawing challenge with the drawing club.

When it comes to commuting and living in London, I'm confident that Student Finance will help alleviate your worries if you apply for a Maintenance Loan, which should help to make the cost of travel, necessities, and accommodation (if you decide to stay in accommodation) easier to handle. It's an even split with roughly 50% of Escape students in accommodation and the other 50% coming in from home. I commute from home since I'm not too far away and just felt more comfortable doing that personally, but either way there are resources such as Student Oyster Cards for public transport which make travel more affordable and if you're getting Student Finance, you'll be able to recieve higher payment due to the fact you'll be living in London. Since I wasn't staying in accommodation, I didn't get as much on my maintenance loan but it was still enough to comfortably cover travel and necessities. I don't see any reason why the same wouldn't be the case for you, regardless of whether you choose accommodation or commuting, since Student Finance scales accordingly to help cover costs. For more help with the "living as a student in London" side of things, I'd recommend looking for resources and advice online such as this handy guide from SaveTheStudent.

Moving on to finding applicants: it's definitely a challenge! At this stage where people are looking at Open Days and figuring out where they want to apply, there's not much online discourse surrounding specific institutions (and I've definitely scoured this site for it). It usually gets going around the time that offers are given out and people know more assuredly where they're heading. If only more people were proactive from the get-go like you!
If you want to meet applicants, I'd definitely recommend chatting to people during the Open Day. It's unfortunately not common for people to search for other applicants online or be vocal online about where they're applying. I'd say your best bet is definitely in person at Escape events.

Anyway, this post is getting quite lengthy so I'll leave it there, but feel free to follow up on anything you want to, or inquire further about anything you need! As a final thing I just wanted to say that Hollow Knight is an amazing game. I definitely like that one a lot too. (Especially the character designs.)

I hope this helps! Good luck with everything!

Hey I’m applying there for 2022 too! And for the same course!

I think it’ll be my first choice because the course just looks perfect and so does the uni. I’m a bit worried about it being a small university but from what I read there’s a strong sense of community. Is it your first choice?

Hello!! It's great to find somebody else applying for the same course as me, let alone the same place!

At the moment it most likely will be my first choice, I'm planning on heading to the open day next Saturday just to make sure but like you I've also read about the strong sense of community and whatnot which is one of the things that drew me to Escape in the first place  It's between this place, DMU and Herts for me, those are my top choices. I got the notification from UCAS that my application has been received so I'm very excited!

I totally agree about the course and the uni feeling perfect too! I was a little sceptical about the small size at first too, as well as the fact that it'd probably be a very different uni experience to the usual but a former student of my sixth form that my art teacher put me in touch with attended Escape and after talking to her I was reassured. The opportunities for connections/networking as well as the experience of the people tutoring you and the professional feedback you can receive is definitely a plus and if anything I'm looking forward to going somewhere with a little less people! I think the idea of a closer-knit community is really nice haha

Hi, thank you so much for such a detailed answer! This is really helpful

I'm glad to hear there are lots of opportunities with things like societies and other social things like that. I was a bit worried initially that there wouldn't be much of that because of the size of the college haha
But it seems like there's lots of chances for people to socialise and stuff so that sounds like lots of fun!!

Thanks for your advice with the finance side of things too. I'll definitely have to do a bit more research into that myself when the time's right! I think my main concern is finding affordable accommodation at the moment as a lot of the ones I've found cost quite a lot, probably because they're within Central London. But if commuting from not too far away from London isn't so bad I suppose I could consider finding somewhere to live outside of London instead (commuting from home isn't an option as I'm not particularly nearby!)

I'm definitely looking forward to the Open Day (which is already next week! Time flies haha) and meeting people in person so I probably will start there with finding other applicants to talk to! After some discussion with a friend I was reminded that it is still pretty early days in terms of UCAS stuff for most people so I guess it does make sense that there isn't too much activity online at the moment, especially since the actual deadline is in January. Either way I'd probably be one of the first online to be discussing that stuff given how early my school sets the deadline for applications haha

Anyways, thank you so much again for your response! I don't think I have anything else I'd like to ask at the moment apart from questions I have saved for Open Day  but I will come back here if I think of some more questions afterwards. I'm glad to see a few more people replying to this thread so I look forward to meeting everybody eventually!

(And yes, the character designs in HK are amazing!! The art in that game is just beautiful all around. One of my big inspirations at the moment!)
Glad I could help! If you did think of any further questions, you can always reach out here. I hope you enjoy the Open Day!

Hi Rohnak,

No worries everything went well. Thank you for asking.

Currently I'm trying to figure out how I will be displaying my portfolio. Originally I was considering using Art Station however I cannot display photography on there. Would you be able to give me some recommendations or explain how you displayed your portfolio please?

Naarah
Hello again @naarah!

I'd be happy to give you some portfolio setup advice! The site that I used for my portfolio when I applied to universities was Tumblr. Using a Tumblr account, I created a portfolio using their "Blog" feature, which has premade themes for you to choose from (including Portfolio ones). It's free, and uploading content to your blog is really similar to making a post on Twitter or Instagram, so you don't have to worry about web design. It's actually pretty similar to ArtStation, and some universities recommend this specific site. If it sounds good to you, here's a step-by-step guide I found on how to make a Tumblr blog.

There's other sites too, such as Wix and Adobe Portfolio (which are also free) and while they're more customisable in terms of the layout, it requires a little more work to get them looking professional. It all depends on what you feel comfortable with!

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good luck with the portfolio.

I've been doing some research and seen that you can make a rookies account with a dashboard of your pieces. Is that something that you would recommend.

Thanks again for the reply
Naarah
Hi again @naarah!

The short answer is: yes, absolutely! The Rookies are a great way for students and junior animators to be seen in the industry. You could definitely make a Rookies account and use it to showcase some of your work. I'd also strongly recommend using it as a platform to network: join contests, chat with others, and just engage in that environment when you are able to.

That being said, I wouldn't recommend the Rookies as the only way to find your work. A personal website, even a simple free one, is better as sometimes universities can be picky about how you present work online, and a site of your own means that you're least likely to run into a situation where someone's questioning why your work is there, or doesn't quite understand how to access it.

For example: one of my classmates this year hosted their submission blog posts on a site that required an account to view. They were given a chance to correct it but you can't always depend on that leniency! Sites like ArtStation, Behance, and the Rookies don't always have this issue, but they do change very often and old links become invalid.

I, personally, would play it safe and make a free site of my own in addition to engaging on these social-media-esque sites. In the end, though, it's totally your choice!

Hope this helped. As always, I'm here to answer any questions you might have.

I think it’ll be my first choice because the course just looks perfect and so does the uni. I’m a bit worried about it being a small university but from what I read there’s a strong sense of community. Is it your first choice?

Just got invited to a Creative Workshop yesterday, I'll be going 13th December 16:30! Very excited
Can I ask how presenting your portfolio during the workshop works? Should I make a slideshow-type presentation to talk through or display my work on a website like the ones you mentioned?

Also, best of luck to you, Omaiie! Hope it goes well.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to it
I've decided to just go ahead and make myself a slideshow because I feel like that would be a better format for my presentation rather than navigating a website ^^" especially since you only get ten or so minutes to present. I'm a little worried I won't get through everything I want to show but I'll try my best!

Hi again @omaiie!

I'm really sorry that this question flew under the radar until now! If you have any questions in the future I would recommend @-ing this account or replying to it so that we get notified.

The good news is that a slideshow is absolutely fine! Any format is acceptable so long as it clearly shows your work. I've seen everything from websites to slideshows to giant A1 hardback sketchbooks and there's never been an issue. A website is professional and something you will eventually need (an online blog showcasing the progress of your projects is mandatory for 2nd Year and above at Escape) but for now, anything is fine! Don't worry about not having a website yet.

Hope that helps. I wish you the best of luck with your workshop! I'm sooo excited for you!
